It was a special High
Holiday service. Many of
the worshipers had never
seen a Torah nor heard the
soulful call of the shofar.
Yet, they proudly recited
the words of Shema Yisroel
and listened attentively as
Rabbi Noah M. Gamze con-
ducted the service at the
Downtown Synagogue.
They are Jews of the inner
city.
The unique holiday serv-
ice was sponsored by the
Voluriteers for Isolated
People (VIP) group of the
Jewish Vocational Service
(JVS), for the benefit of
their special friends, or
"Haverim."
VIP is part of the JVS
Project Outreach program,
begun three years ago with
a grant from the Jewish
Community Foundation of
United Jewish Charities.
Both the JVS and United
Jewish Charities are
member agencies of the
Jewish Welfare Federation.
Many of the haverim
are elderly and impaired.
Some have been in-
stitutionalized. They live
in boarding houses and
nursing homes in the
inner city. Without their
VIP friends who visit at
least once a month, they
would have little contact
with the outside world,
and none with Judaism.
About 40 volunteers are
involved with the program.
They visit more than 200
inner city Jews regularly,

friendship,
bringing
warmth, something to read
and something to "nosh."
The program is guided by
Project Outreach staff
worker Faye Menczer and
volunteer coordinator Joe
Lapides. Their goal is to re-
cruit additional volunteers
to visit isolated people who
are not necessarily in adult
care facilities, but who live
alone and have minimal or
no contact with friends or
family. According to Mrs.
Menczer, 80 percent of the
haverim have no visitors
other than the volunteers.
A commitment of two to
three hours a month is re-
quested. Volunteers receive
orientation and are intro-
duced to their haverim by
Mrs. Menczer.
As part of the High
Holiday service, Rabbi
Gamze called the
haverim up to the bima,
where each had a chance
to look at the Torah. For
many of them, it was a
new experience.
Robert Singer visits six
haverim who live in various
adult care facilities on East
Grand Boulevard. One of
his special friends hadn't
had any visitors in eight
years until Singer started
calling on him.
Anyone interested in vol-
unteering or providing
names of people who could
benefit from the program
can call Mrs. Meczer at JVS,
833-8100.
