an important challenge to
meet the emergencies for
health services in Israel,
emergencies created by cur-
rent problems in Lebanon
and within Israel.
The establishment of a
Magen David Adorn (MDA)
Scientific Laboratory at the
new National Blood Center
in Israel in honor of Anna
and Philip Slomovitz of De-
troit has been announced
in conjunction with the
dinner. The Slomovitz MDA
Hematology Laboratory has
been set up by the Michigan
Region "in grateful recogni-
tion of the splendid support
rendered to MDA, Israel's
emergency medical, ambu-
lance and blood services, by
Mr. and Mrs. Slomovitz."
As Israel's national blood
service, MDA recruits,
processes, stores and dis-
tributes blood, plasma and
blood derivatives to all hos-
pitals. MDA supplies 100
percent of the military blood
needs and 85 percent of the
civilian blood require-
ments.
The Colonel David Mar-
cus Blood Fractionation and
Plasma-Drying Institute
processes various blood
components such as fresh
frozen plasma, leukocytes,
thrombocyte concentrates,
normal serum albumin,
immune serum gamma
globulin, cryoprecipitates (a
life saver for the more than
200 hemophiliacs in the
country) and others.
Dr. Mames and Dr. Mor-
ris Starkman of MDA's
Medical-Dental Council
pointed out that it has been
estimated that the need for
blood and vital blood corn-
ponents will be tripled in
the next eight to ten years.
The new blood center, a
projected $12-15 million

complex slated for construc-
tion in Kiryat Ono near Tel
Aviv) will enable MDA to
expand, upgrade and mod-
ernize services. It will in-
clude a fully-equipped blood
donor care center, lecture
halls, research and quality
control facilities and the
Slomovitz laboratory.
In the past, the Michigan
Region has also established
a Slomovitz Paramedic
Training Scholarship,
Slomovitz Leukemia and
Hemophilia Special Funds,
and, in their honor, a room
was contributed at the Wal-
ler First Aid Medical Cen-
ter.
In announcing the recent

gift of the Slomovitz Scien-
tific Laboratory, Drs.
Mames and Starkman paid
tribute to the "altruistic,
untiring service given co
MDA by Mr. and Mrs'.
Slomovitz." The
Slomovitzes have also con-
tributed a fully equipped
ambulance to MDA.
The annual testimonial
dinner of the Michigan
Region, honoring Rep. San-
der Levin, will benefit the
MDA Blood Center. It will
also help to alleviate the
MDA cash flow shortage.
