Desmond, community rela-
tions director, where Con-
rad not only met Charlie
and Hank, but many old
timers present for the event
. He walked on "Cloud 9"
like a little kid . . . and had
his picture taken with the
two greats.
When Co"nrad finally left
the room, his wife Barbara
said he was so excited there
was even a tear in the
corner of Conrad's eye . . .
Their three daughters were
there ... and also his 78-
year-old mother, Sadie,
"who gets more excited
about baseball than all of
us," says Conrad.

PREMATURE AN-
NOUNCEMENT in met-
ropolitan paper had folks
galore flocking to Benji's on
Orchard Lake Road . . . to
try out his new wine bar .. .
Trouble was he didn't have
a license yet and so nobody
was served beer or wine.
However, it's official now
. . . Ben Pearlman has got-
ten his ticket . . . and Benji's
can now serve beer and wine
. . . The wine bar . . . only
one in the Detroit area . . . is
being designed and built .. .
When completed, people
will be able to select from 10
to 15 choices.
"TURK" PRUJAN
(Herman Prujansky) was in
town recently to visit
friends . . . and spend a few
days for checkup in Univer-
sity Hospital, Ann Arbor..
He's the same "Turk" .. .
telling whiskered jokes and
charming people with his
"pied piper" way of living.
His LP record, "Turk Pru-
jan," has many of the songs
written by him as an
ASCAP member . . . but the
talent agent in him still
prevails . . . Turk's latest
find is a singer named Dale
Longaro who he claims is
the new shadow of Al Jolson
. . . looking, singing, danc-
ing and whistling like
"Jolie."
"Turk" intends bringing
Dale to Detroit and break-
ing him in . . . He feels an-
other "winner" to go along
with those brought to star-
dom by him throughout the
years.
Turk's charisma reaches
out like the tentacles of an
octopus . . . and he has al-
ways had music in his soul
. . . even though not know-
ing one note from another
. . . "Turk" would collabo-
rate with others to get his
music and lyrics scored.
At one of the heights of
his activities, "Turk" was
stricken with a stroke .. .
hospitalized for a year .. .
and had a rough road re-
cuperating . . . However,
nothing seems to keep this
man down.
Va. Man Quits
Country Club,
Cites Bias
NEW YORK — G. Frank
Clement, a retired insur-
ance executive in Roanoke,
Va., has resigned from the
Shenandoah Country Club,
citing the club's refusal to
admit Jews and other
minorities as members.
In a letter to Clement
praising his "courageous ac-
tion," Samuel Rabinove, di-
rector of the American
Jewish Committee's Dis-
crimination Division,
stated that "if more persons
of principle would behave in
similar fashion, insidious
discrimination would
rapidly become a thing of
the past."
Clement, who had be-
longed to the 400-member
Virginia club for almost 25
years, said he had been un-
happy with its membership
practices but had hoped that
"the situation would
straighten itself out."
