circulated . . . pressuring
the Tiger front office into re-
tiring legendary 2 and 5 .. .
For years, he had felt such
an event should have hap-
pened.
Conrad is 51 years old and
a busy family physician who
grew up with the 1940s De-
troit Tigers . . . living in the
Davison-Linwood area . . .
attending MacCulloch,
Durfee and Central . . . His
idol was and to this day still
is Hank Greenberg.
Conrad worked on cir-
culating the petitions dur-
ing the summer of 1982 .. .
There was a petition at all
times in his Garden City
office . . . at the nurse's
desk, where all patients
wouldn't dare leave without
leaving their signatures .. .
He passed out the forms at
various meeing places,
sports shops, etc. . . . and
had about 8,000 signatures
by August 1982.
Conrad was then ready to
send all of them to Jim
Campbell, Tiger general
'manager, when it was an-
nounced that the Detroit
Baseball organization was
retiring both numbers on
June 12 . . . Whether a coin-
cidence or not, Conrad
passed along the signed pet-
itions to Campbell, who
called him and set aside two
excellent seats for the doub-
leheader . . . plus ar-
rangements to meet his
heroes.
After the ceremonies re-
tiring Charlie's and
Hank's numbers between
games, he was escorted to
the "Tiger Room" by Vince
