MARK, MIKE AND "DUKE"

Danny Raskin's

The Best of Everything)

IF THE ADAGE hangs
true that good things come
in little packages, there's
much to be said for a small
deli-restaurant in Ferndale
that seats only 29 people.
This is Manny's Deli-
Restaurant on Nine Mile
just west of Woodward .. .
the former site of Sammy's
Corned Beef & Rye, owned
by Sammy Sadler . . . with
its four booths, three two-
top tables and seven counter
seats.
One of the biggest plus
marks for Manny's is the 96
percent given it by Ferndale
health department . . . an
unbelievably high mark .. .
You can see it here . . . with
such gleaming stainless
steel all over the back work
counter walls . . . newly-
tiled floors . . . spotless
Formica counter and top
partition between seating
areas and back sector.

It is one of those little
"mamma and pappa" op-
erations people like ...
with hard-workers
Manny and Christina
Farao dishing out good
food and much satisfac-
tion.

They took over the place
from Sammy on Jan. 11,
1982 . . . and it has become a
place where people journey
from all areas . . . The
booths have been recovered
. . . there's now a cement
walk in back, with planted
flowers folks can see as they
park their cars in the huge
350-auto city parking area
... Display cases have been
rebuilt . . . and new modern
cooking equipment has
been installed.
Manny was in the kitchen
of Toronto's Royal York
Hotel, so is no stranger to
the restaurant game . . . He
enjoys a good sandwich
himself, and in the deli
owned by him and Chris-
tina, is a stickler for quality
and goodness.
His sandwiches have at
least five ounces of meat
and cost less than at most
delis . . . It's a good place for
folks in a hurry to have a
bowl of soup, sandwich .. .
and get about their busi-
ness.

Christina makes the
soup ... and Manny
makes the chili that so
many people rave about
... It's full-bodied and
very flavorful ... not the
slightest hint of hot tast-
ing ... That's people's
business to do as they
wish ... as bottles of hot
sauce sit for their use if
needed.

The thick body and good
flavor also holds true for
homemade soups . . . On a
wall hangs a sign listing the
many choices and reading,
"No preservatives, no artifi-
cial flavor or color."
Salamis and bags of garlic
hang around the back wall
and window denoting the
looks of a deli . . . and it's the
only one I know that gives
people free samples of
corned beef, pastrami,
salami, roast beef,

homemade soup or chili .. .
A good idea, to be sure .. .
What better way than this
to show off confidence .. .
with pride.
A big favorite of the
former Sammy's, that
Floogie Dog, has remained
at Manny's . . . boiled hot
dog with green pepper,
onion and pickle on a bun.

It's quite a sight to see
people being offered free
pieces of whatever
Manny is cutting on his
machine ... reminiscent
of days gone by . . . This is
a homey type of opera-
tion . . . certainly not pre-
tentious in any sense of
the word ... but ultra
clean ... serving quality
food ... and among the
best cups of coffee
around.

You can't miss the big yel-
low awning that extends
from Manny's entrance .. .
and chances are very good
that you'll be mighty glad
you didn't.
' Manny's- is open 9 to 6
Monday through Saturday,
except Fridays, 9 to 7.
NEWEST NITERY on
the horizon is Nicky's, re-
cently opened at former Ko-
gy's locale in Top of Troy
Bldg. on Big Beaver Road
. . . owned by Nick Sorise
and John Reaser . . . Conti-
nental cuisine is featured
. . . with top .executive chef
Tino Burrara, formerly of a
leading northwest gourmet
dining spot.
Nick and John almost
completely gutted the place
. . . and have given it a new
look . . . seating 250 with
bar . . . plus a dance floor,
where Attractions play
through September . . . fol-
lowed by Pam Martin.

Purple," "Sophisticated
Lady," "Shanty In Old
Shanty Town," "Don't Get
Around Much Anymore"
and so many others.
Charles improvises excel-
lently and plays with the
true feeling of a class per-
former.
SMALL A DEMAND as
it may be, the customer
reaction has been very
strong that Denny's on
Greenfield just south of 11
Mile serve white; albacore
tuna . . . The policy of this
conglomerate giant with
over 1,000 units has been

MOST
MISUN-
DERSTOOD word among

club owners is "Jazz" .. .
Also so many people, who
mistakenly think of it along
the lines of hard rock . . .
Jazz is really the grand-
daddy of popular music .. .
and its interpretation by a
good performer can be beau-
tiful.
This is piano stylist
Charles Rowland . . . ap-
pearing Thursdays through
Sundays . . . at Dominico's
on Coolidge between 11 and
12 Mile roads . . . His jazz
includes the soft touch as
fingers ramble on an elec-
tric piano . . . He isn't
allowed the range of an 88
keyboard, but still makes
his electric piano virtually
sing on songs like "Misty."
You might call Charles'
music "melodic jazz" . . . as
he entertains with easily
recognizable melody . . . on
such great standards like
"Stardust," "Laura," " 'A'
Train," "Just In Time,"
"The Man I Love," "Deep
