Nonagenarian John C. Hopp Represents
Interest in Nearly a Century of Jewish Life
John C. Hopp reached his
90th year on Sept. 1. In
more than one sense, his
life's activities mirror
nearly a century of life in
Michigan — in the civic and
Jewish communities. Yet,
this nonagenarian retains a
youthfulness that is re-
flected in his continuing
interest in the causes that
gave him leadership in this
city and state.
His nearly regular
attendance at religious
services at Temple Beth El,
the congregation he served
as president and in other
capacities; his concern for
the successes of Allied
Jewish Campaigns, his
philanthropic identifica-
tions — they all depict an
admirable devotion by the
man of 90 who is remem-
bered for the accumulated
deeds that made his name a
mark of great communal re-
spect.
Remarkable persistence,
retention of communal and
business interests, mark
the 90-year-old personali-
ty's character. Organizer,
56 years ago, of the Hopp
Management Co., he con-
tinues his activities in the
firm, together with his son,
John C. Hopp, Jr., and he is
at his desk for a few hours
daily in the company offices
in Southfield.

He joined Temple Beth El
in 1932, and in 1952 was
co-chairman of a survey
committee of the temple to
discuss the development- of
additional facilities for
temple members in north-
west Detroit.
He was elected president
of the congregation in 1957
and served in that capacity
until 1959. At the conclu-
sion of his term as
president, the temple pre-
sented Mr. Hopp with a cita-
tion "in commendation of
his inspired leadership and
outstanding record of serv-
ice."
A deeply moving family
devotion relates to
nonagenarian John C.
Hopp. There was a strong
and cooperative union in
family matters and com-
munity loyalties with his
wife, who died on July 2,
1981. Mr. Hopp speaks with
pride of that relationship in
a 56-year marriage.

In the latter aspect, he
has an added enthusiasm
through a great-grand-

and her daughter — John C.
Hopp's great-grand-
daughter — is the 16-
month-old Israeli Sabra
Oshrat Suzanne Metzl.
Mr. Hopp has two chil-
dren, Lois H. Mark and
John C. Hopp, Jr. Among
his other grandchildren are
Elizabeth Brown, Susan

Judy Hopp.
The Hopp record of activi-
