Sandinistas, forcefully ex-
pelling the Jewish citizens,
the young, the sick, the old
and defiling a small
synagogue and thus march-
ing to the beat of their grin-
ning PLO co-conspirators.
They spoke not in mean-
ingful terms of the Corn-
munist atrocities in Af-
ghanistan and Vietnam.

They spoke not of the
plight of the Jewish pris-
oners in Russia and
Jewish hostages in Syria
. . . nor very much about
the Bahai and Jews mur-
dered in Iran.

They spoke not of the
fanatic followers of French
Canada's Charbonneau
screaming "Mort au Juif" at
a recent "peace rally" in
Montreal.
But, they spoke with
hatred concerning Israel's
sincere if sometimes inept
way of defending its chil-
dren in their northern terri-
tory.
They spoke in menacing
terms abdut right-wing ex-
cesses but spoke evasively
and defensively about simi-
lar excesses of the left.

They could have
reached the stars, per-
haps Heaven itself, by
shouting, as did Shakes-
peare, "A plague on both
your houses."

They could have behaved
as Christians. Yet, they
chose to put their faith in
pragmatism, in the way of
Machiavelli.
The day they and their
UN renegades spoke of the
Jews as racists, and this is
what they meant, their de-
ceiving euphemism not
withstanding, that day
marked the beginning of the
"end of days."
Read the wisdom of Eric
Hoffer, San Francisco
longshoreman:

"I have a diabolic dis-
turbance in my soul . . .
one that haunts me as I
meditate in the streets of
my sweet, savage city and
meander by the smiling
shores, tranquil and tur-
bulent. The black loam
having blossomed into
rainbows now in
the grey mist of death. If
the Christians allow this
People of the Book in
their Land to die, all our
bones will mold forever
in their graves."

And yet, there may be
hope. Some prevailed upon
the hostile many, and thus
allowed learned rabbis to
speak. And so they did, to
polite applause, and thus
the Christians, for an hour,
became Christian.

more than 60 years; well be-
fore the state of Israel was
established. At that time,
the idea of a Jewish home-
land in Palestine was sup-
ported by Republicans in
the U.S. House and Senate.
The commitment out-
lined in 1922 Republican
resolutions has been reaf-
firmed in every Republican
Convention platform since
Israel's creation in 1948.
Again and again, the Re-
publican Party has called
for continued economic and
military assistance for our
most dependable ally in the
volatile Mideast region.
The 1980 Republican
platform states, "The sover-
eignty, security, and integ-
rity of the state of Israel is a
moral imperative of the
United States. Republicans
reaffirm our fundamental
and enduring commitment
to this principle. We will
continue to honor our na-
tion's commitment through
political, economic, dip-
lomatic and military aid."
Just less than six months
ago, before the American
Gathering of the Holocaust
Survivors, President Re-
agan reaffirmed his com-
mitment to the security of
Israel. "As a man whose
heart is with you - and as
President of a people you
are now so much a part of -
I promise you that the secu-
rity of your safe havens,
here and in Israel, will
never be compromised."
It is the tradition of
friendship and support, and

the common goal of a
negotiated, lasting peace in
the Middle East that keeps
the United States and Israel
standing tall together. It is
a bond which cannot be
broken.
L'Shana Tova, may the
New Year bring a lasting
peace to all mankind.

The U.S. acknowledged
last January that long-
range sophisticated
Soviet-made SAM-5 anti-
aircraft missiles were being
"deployed" in Syria, the
first time the weaponry was
provided by the Soviets to
an ally outside the Warsaw
Pact countries.
It was later determined
that Soviet personnel were
manning the missile sites.
