Liberia President Meets Begin Over Renewal of Relations

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Premier Menahem Begin
met with Liberian
President Samuel Doe and
complimented him on the
courage of his decision to
renew diplomatic relations
with Israel and to visit
Jerusalem.
Doe, in turn, promised to
do everything in his power
to influence other Black Af-
rican heads of state to renew
diplomatic ties with Israel.
He said Liberia was ready to
undertake efforts to help
bring about peace in the
Middle East.

Doe and Foreign Minister

was reached for Israel to
send a team of eye spe-
cialists to Liberia, set up a
Liberian shipping line and a
chain of supermarkets.
It was also announced
that Israel was sending a
team of agricultural ex-
perts to Liberia im-
mediately to survey
country's farming prob-
lems. Doe reportedly also
asked Israel to help con-
vince American Jews to
invest in Liberia.
Doe's four-day state visit
to Israel is the first in 12
years by a Black African
leader. In 1971,,the leaders
of Zaire, Nigeria Cameroon
and Senegal came together
in Israel.

their territorial integrity
and sovereignty.
The statement also noted
that the main reason for the
severance of ties with Israel
— solidarity with Egypt
over the occupation of its
territory by Israeli armed
forces no longer exists
since Egyptian territory has
been restored and Egypt has
established diplomatic rela-
tions with Israel.
A Foreign Ministry
spokesman in Jerusalem
said that Israel had received
no formal notice of Liberia's
decision, adding that
Shamir's statement of satis-
faction was based on a Mon-
rovia Radio announcement.
But ministry officials con-
firmed that a tap-level Libe-
rian delegation had pre-
ceded Doe's visit to Israel.
Liberia was colonized and
turned into a republic in the
19th Century by freed
American black slaves. Its
civilian president was over-
thrown in 1980 by a mili-
tary regime headed by Doe.
In 1947, at the United
Nations, Liberia supported
the idea of setting up a
Jewish state in what was
then Palestine.
