Dr. Perry Burnstine Dies

Dr. Perry P. Burnstine, a
physician in family prac-
tice, died Aug. 11 at age 83.

Born in Windsor, Dr.
Burnstine practiced in De-
troit from 1924 until the
time of his death.
He was a member of the
Michigan State and Wayne
County Medical Societies
and the American Medical
Association.

He was graduated from
Detroit's Central High
School and from the
former Detroit College of
Medicine in 1923.

Shaarey Zedek. Dr.
Burnstine also. was a

ters, Mrs. Harold (Barbara)
Nelson and Mrs. Gerald
(Jeanne) Kabeck; three
brothers, Monte of Yuma,
Ariz., Al E. and Zangwill; a
sister, Mrs. Hyman (Cecille)
Levy; nine grandchildren
and three great-grand-
children.

Nita Z. "Billie" Barak, an
active member of Jewish
women's and civic cultural
organizations, died Aug. 14
at age 60.
A native Detroiter, Mrs.
Barak was the president of
the Hilberry Theater Un-
derstudies and current
chairman of the archives
committee of Cong. Shaarey
Zedek at the time of her
death.
She was the former
chairman of the Cong.
Shaarey Zedek cultural
commission. A past
president of the Greater De-
troit Section of the National
Council of Jewish Women,
Mrs. Barak was a board
member at the time of her
death.
She was a former board
member of the Greater
Detroit Chapter, Bran-
deis University National
Women's Committee and
Sinai Hospital Guild.
Mrs. Barak was the past
president and current board
member of the Music Hall

Philatelist Club.

Eleanor Waxer

Eleanor Waxer, a secre-
tary who was employed in
many departments at Sinai
Hospital, died Aug. .7 at age
57.
A native Detroiter, Mrs.
Waxer attended South-
western High School and
was graduated from Com-
merce High School.
She worked for the S.S.
Kresge Corp., at Winkel-
man's, for the Department
of the Army and in physi-
cians' offices.
Much of her spare time
was spent working for
civil rights as a volunteer
with the American Civil
Liberties Union. She
helped establish the first
Michigan ACLU office in
Detroit.
Mrs. Waxer was involved
in the anti-war movement
during the Vietnam era and
in Eugene McCarthy's
Presidential campaign.
She is survived by a son,
Douglas; and a sister.

WASHINGTON — Ben-
jamin V. Cohen, one of the
architects of President
Roosevelt's New Deal, died
Aug. 15 at age 88.
Mr. Cohen, who teamed
with Thomas G. Corcoran,
was among Roosevelt's top
advisers. He was instru-
mental in shaping legisla-
tion passed to ease the coun-
try out of the Depression
and helped to draft lend-
lease legislation that pro-
vided military supplies and
other defense services to the
Allies before the U.S.
entered World War II.
He was attached to the
U.S. Embassy in London,
served under Secretary of
State James F. Byrnes and
later was named State De-
partment counselor.
He
served
under
President Truman as a
member of the U.S. delega-
tion to the UN General As-
sembly and was the late
John F. Kennedy's special
assistant on disarmament.
