Kosher Consumers Warned
on Products from Sanders

Dr. Lawrence Loewent-
hal has been elected
president of the Detroit
Friends of Shaare Zedek
Hospital in Jerusalem.
Dr. Loewenthal is a
member of the American
Board of Ophthalmology,
the American Intraocular
Implant Society and the
American Association of
Ophthalmology and has
written several professional
research papers.
Dr. Loewenthal serves on
the culture and education
committee of the Jewish
Welfare Federation and is a
member of the board of the
Hebrew Free Loan Associa-
tion.
A former vice president
of Akiva Hebrew Day
School, he was instru-
mental in the develop-
ment of the Stollman
Educational Center and
is the chairman of the
Capital Campaign.

A special warning was is-
sued for kosher consumers
regarding the recently an-
nounced kosher certifica-
tion that was granted to the
ice cream division of the
Fred Sanders Co. of Detroit
by the Metropolitan Kas-
hruth Council of Michigan.
Rabbi Jack Goldman,
administrator of the Kas-
hruth Council, announced
that only packaged ice
cream and chocolate fudge
in jars are approved for
kosher use. The Fred San-
ders Co. owns 39 retail out-
lets which are known as
Sanders Ice Cream Parlors.
All of these merchandise
the kosher Sanders ice
creams and fudge toppings.
However, the fountain
services of these establish-
ments are not kosher. The
tableware and the dishes
'are cleansed in non-kosher
dishwashers, the fudge is
heated in non-kosher uten-
sils, and various fruit top-
pings used in the stores are
not kosher.
Goldman
Rabbi
pointed out that kosher
packaged goods are
available in all the stores,
in addition to many other
supermarkets, depart-
ment stores, party stores
and drug stores. But, for
the time being, kosher
certification extends only
to sealed packaged
products. This includes
all of the ice cream
flavors and all four of the
chocolate fudge top-
pings.
Steps are being taken,
Rabbi Goldman explained,
to bring the Sanders Ice
Cream Parlors up to a level
where their fountain serv-
ices will be kosher as well.
Soon all of the kosher
products of the Fred San-
