with Norman Schwartz in
this popular dining and
watering spot that contin-
ually draws such raves from
people.
How they got the name
Rhinoceros is purely acci-
dental . . . When Norman
and Michael bought the
place in 1978, seating only
22 in one room, among the
first pieces of art they found
in an art shop was a large,
heavy metal rhinoceros ..
That name seems catchier
and different than just plain
Vanderwall's Bar, which it
had been since 1955, and so
this historic place had an-
other new title.
In 1800 it was the original
Riopelle Farm . . . In 1852,
the Carriage Trim and Liv-
ery Stable . . . In 1877,
Troester's Saloon was one of
Detroit's earliest bars .. .
built with brick made right
on the property.
That metal rhinoceros
stands majestically on
the back bar ... in front
of a mirror from
Michael's home ... which
was purchased in
Budapest by its previous
owners ... From the
1920's, the mirror is un-
usual ... its high-quality
glass within a frame
made with tiny layers of
'gold built up to reach a
certain level.
That original 22 seating
capacity is now up to 65 in
three dining areas . . . plus a
lounge for 30 more.
Rooms are now on both
sides of a hall-like dining
area . . . with wood dividers
partially enclosing them .. .
First addition was painted
green and called the Green
Room . . . Next came the
Gray Room with its very in-
teresting open woodwork
that has been the cause of
much favorable comment.
On the walls hang origi-
nal Erte and Dali lithog-
raphs . . . The collection of
furniture dates back to the
late 1800s and early 1900s
. . . plus an 1820 gold-leaf
laminated, two-legged table
beneath a French menu in
the Gray Room. The French
menus were found in a -
trunk Norman had bought.
There are oil lamps on
the bar, Cranberry glass
with Vaseline glass
shades ... A solid cher-
rywood cabinet in the
Gray Room made in the
1920s by Grand Rapids
Furniture Co. is from a
Lansing candy store ...
with eight individual sec-
tions as it stands seven
feet tall and 18 feet long.
Tables in both the Green
and Gray Rooms are from
France . . . dating back to
about 1870 . . . and weigh-
ing about 700 pounds each
. . . with wood frame . . . and
inlaid marble top.
Even the restrooms are
quaint . . . with knotty pine,
antique mirrors and paint-
ings . . . Only the plumbing
seems to be of modern vin-
tage.
Among this beautiful
array of antiques . . . open

beams . . . solid hardwood
oak ceiling and floors .. .
open walls . . . brick made
in a kilm at the old Riopelle
Farm . . . the floors sanded
and varnished back to their
original luster . . . there is
much charm about The
Rhinoceros . . . The inti-
macy and coziness makes
for relaxed dining at its
best.
I was immediately
charmed by the glass
dishes ... everything
seemed to be served on
glass ... such an elegant
way of dining ... Delici-
ous cream of broccoli
soup was brought in a
glass bowl ... by very ef-
ficient, courteous and
congenial waiter Tony
Brown.
Our salad with cold
Romaine lettuce and fresh
mushrooms topped by Bleu
cheese, both wet and dry
crumbled, was superb .. .
For the entree I had Veal
Provincale, having heard so
much about the top grade
Provimi served at
Rhinoceros . . . It was pre-
sented with sliced green
peppers, sliced tomatoes
and sauteed mushrooms .. .
a truly choice dish.
I tasted the swordfish De-
nnis Horwath was eating
and know where to go now
for this delicacy when made
right . . . It was so tender
and tasty.
At another table, four
people each ordered rack of
lamb . . . So many oohs and
ahs combined with finger-
licking as the four savored
their dinner.
In the kitchen evenings
is Chef James Thomas .. .
During days is Chef Mark
Schwartz, Norman's son.
The bread at Rhinoceros
is worth talking about .. .
made on the premises .. .
with sesame seeds or poppy
seeds . . . so very fluffy .. .
and almost tasting like cake
. . . How they get this flavor
is a secret that shouldn't be
given out and probably isn't
. . . Whoever said that man
cannot live on bread alone
never tasted it at
Rhinoceros . . . People have
been known to make meals
out of it.
There's entertainment
seven nights a week at
Rhinoceros . . . The cocktail
hour while we were there
was a rare treat . . .
thoroughly_ enjoyable with
the duo from Kovac's
Lounge . . . Alex Godla play-
ing his violin that virtually
sings . . . accompanied by
very accomplished guitarist
Norman Ballog . . . Their
rendition of "Those Were
The Days" is beautiful.
A favorite waitress in the
evenings is personable
Diane Esper . . . and bar-
maid Ellen Keller is perfect
for the job . . . working days
or evenings . . . depending
on her practice . . . as a full-
time psychotherapist.
Jack Van Gorden, Tues-
day, Thursday and Friday
evenings, pianist-vocalist,
was on vacation while I was
