A Kentucky Reform
rabbi, who serves as a chap-
lain for some 70 Jewish in-
mates at a federal prison,
has reported that he feels
isolated in that work be-
cause there is no Jewish
organization able or willing
to assist him as a prison
chaplain.
Rabbi William J. Leffler,
spiritual leader of Temple
Adat Israel, of Lexington,
Ky. described the impact of
such isolation on his minis-
try to the federal prison in-
mates in a report in a recent
issue of "Shma."
Commenting that the
inmates "present chal-
lenges which a rabbi does
not normally encounter,"
Rabbi Leffler reported that
regardless of whether they
had been active or not as
Jews before incarceration,
in prison their Judaism
suddenly "means a great
deal to them."
Leffler
Rabbi
suggested the fact that
"there are many Jews" in
America's prisons — both
federal and state peniten-
tiaries — is one which

NEW YORK (JTA) —
The American Jewish Joint
Distribution Committee
(JDC) increased its efforts
last year to aid Jewish
communities overseas,' ac-
cording to the 1982 annual
report released this month
by the organization. The
1982 report coveredthe ac-
tivities of the JDC in its
program of rescue, relief
and rehabilitation.
In his introduction to the
report, Ralph Goldman,
executive vice president of
the JDC, said that programs
helping "hundreds of
thousands" of people in
some 30 countries" totaled
$43.1 million in 1982, of
which $37.8 million came
from the United Jewish Ap-
peal supported by the
Jewish federations and wel-
fare funds." Other contribu-
tions came from the United
States Refugee Program
and from Jewish com-
munities in Canada,

Probe Asked
ALBANY, N.Y. — New
York State Senator Carol
Berman has asked the Fed-
eral Trade Commission and
the U.S. Attorney General
to investigate the
"monopolistic trade prac-
tices" of the kosher poultry
industry.
During a hearing last
week of the Ad Hoc Com-
mittee on Pricing of Kosher
Food Sen. Berman cited tes-
timony by Mark Wolff, a
former distributor for Em-
pire Kosher Poultry, as evi-
dence of "price fixing in the
industry, 'particularly be-
fore the Jewish holidays."
Sen. Berman is the chair-
man of the committee.
