July 4th Reflections: Can It Happen Here?

cially of vandalism and vio-

annual ADL review of re-
ported anti-Semitic inci-
dents shows a sharp up-
surge in recent years, reach-
ing a high of 974 in . 1981
(although there was a de-
cline to 829•reports in 1982).
Even more troubling is
the emergence of heavily
armed extremist right-wing
groups, offering paramilit-

their followers. The most
disturbing development is a
California-based Ministry
of Christ Church (known to
its adherents as Identity)
which teaches that Jews are
children of Satan and
should be exterminated.
The Ministry also teaches
that Jews and Communists
are one and the same. The
church is closely connected
to the Posse Comitatus — a
violent, radical, anti-tax
group. The Posse • received
great publicity when a
member, Gordon W. Kahl,
shot and killed two federal
marshals and was himself
killed in a shootout when he
was tracked down.
Federal investigations
show that there is some
overlap between fringe
groups and that Kahl had
been aided in his flight
from justice by adherents
of other extremist
groups. The New York
Times of June 11 re-
ported that among the
armaments possessed by
the groups are "rocket
propelled grenades, mor-
tars, explosives and pro-
tective equipment, heavy
duty armor ... ," etc.
A series of tapes made by
leaders of the Posse broad-
cast by a radio station in
Dodge City, Iowa suggested
that guerrilla warfare be
used against Jews. (The sta-
tion involved. has been
broadcasting blatant anti-
Semitic and anti-black mes-
sages without any pretense
of fairness or balance and it
is troubling that the FCC
has not cracked down yet.)
This whole development
is a warning to Jewish
organizations to urgently
step up security measures
and to press the federal gov-
ernment to increase its
monitoring of violent
right-wing groups.
Yet, the Posse and rden-
tity and KKK and neo-
Nazis all - remain at the

improvement in attitudes
toward Jews.
Sixty-six percent of gen-
tiles polled said they would
be disturbed little or not at
all if their daughter mar-
ried a Jew — up from 55
percent in 1964.

News find it hard to be-
lieve that anti-Semitism
is weakening. The Yan-
kelovich study showed a
growing gap between
Jewish perceptions and
the actual -presence of
anti-Semitism. Seventy-
six percent of Jews pol-
led felt that the majority
of non-Jews believed that
"Jews have too much
power." Actually, only
one-third of non-Jews
held that belief.
Fifty-five percent of Jews
polled felt that non-Jews be-
lieve that Jews ". . . are try-
ing to push themselves
where they are not wanted."
In fact, 16 percent of non-
Jews expressed that belief.
So can it happen here? In
light of the Holocaust, it
would be madness for Jews
to say "it can't happen here"
ever again. In 1923, Hitler
was a fringe outsider, whose
attempt at violence left him
in jail and a political laugh-
ing stock. Yet 10 years la-
ter, during a major depres-
sion, Hitler came to power
after a 44 percent vote by a
democratic electorate.
After the unraveling of
the American social. fabric

in the late 1960s and 1970s,
no one can say that America
is beyond risk. The concen-
trated' hostility to Israel
shown in the Media during
the Lebanon fighting is a
great concern. It could breed
more anti-Semitism. Since
1964, the precentage of
non-Jewish Americans who
believe that Jews are more
loyal to Israel than to
America has gone up from
13 percent to 23 percent.
Still, so far, the correct
answer is that it is not
happening here now.
Atherica continues to
amaze with its pluralism,
its resilient economic and
political system and its ac-
ceptance of Jews as a
legitimate group entitled to
be different and to push
their own agenda as part of
the American system.

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Three MKs from different
parties sumbitted a motion
in the Knesset Wednesday
asking information on the
fate of the estimated 1,500
Jews that have disappeared
in Argentina in recent
years.
The three-Geula Cohen
(Tehiha), Yair Tzaban _
(Alignment) and Dror
Seigerman (Likud) — acted
despite attempts by the
Foreign Ministry to prevent
a debate on the subject, but
Cohen said the debate
should be held "if they're
kidnapped as Jews, and be-
cause they're Jews."
She added that but even if
not, "if they were kisnapped
as leftists, I have to fight
and struggle for them, as I
would for any citizen in Is-
rael."

REHOVOT (JNI) — The

veloped an inexpensive
process whereby normal
human cells can be prodded
to safely and efficiently pro-

(PA) — an enzyme that
triggers the body's own
blood-clot dissolving
capabilities.

fringe of the fringe groups
in American life. Although
they are dangerous because
of their penchant for vio-
lence, they r have not
achieved any widened
influence. On the contrary,
studies show that long-term
indices of attitudes toward
Jews continue to improve.
A 1981 study by the'
Yankelovich, Skelly and
White firm (which spe-
cializes in attitude re-
search) documented the
improvement. In 1964, 48
percent of non-Jews an-
' swered yes to the ques-
tion, do Jews use shady
practices? By 1981, the
Yankelovich study
showed a drop to 33 per-
cent in those who an-
swered yes. To the state-
ment, 'Jews have a lot of
irritating faults," 48 per-
cent agreed in 1964 while
only 29 percent agreed in
1981.
Yankelovich concluded
that ,"positive images of
Jews are more pervasive
than negative ones."
Ninety-three percent of
Americans polled believed
that 'Jews are usually hard
working," 90 percent that
"Jews have a strong faith in
God," 86 percent that "Jews
are warm and friendly
people." -
Even more significant
was the finding that, gener-
ally speaking, people who
are more educated, people
who are younger and people
who have a higher income
are less prone to anti-
Semitic attitudes and less
sympathetic to them, than
the 55-years-or-older, less-
educated, less-wealthy
groups. The demographics
