JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Raanan,Weitz, the Laborite
co-chairman of the World
Zionist Organization's set-
tlement department, re-
fused to participate in an of-
ficial tour of West Bank set-
tlements by delegates from
the world-Wide Labor
Zionist movement.
Weitz objected to the tour
on grounds that it was a
political act implying Labor
encouragement of the set-
tlements. He suggested that
visitors who were curious
about the , settlements
should visit them privately.
But Yehiel Leket, chairman
of the Labor Zionist move-
ment disagreed.
"Political persons should
also see settlements to
which they object," he said.
He maintained that a visit
to the West Bank settle-
ments does not mean iden-
tification with the Gush
Emunim zealots who in-
habit many of them.

The Detroit community
was one of 13 major cities
that joined in a North
American teleconference,
sponsored by the Council of
Jewish Federations, in
preparation for the 1983
General Assembly of the
Jewish Agency for Israel.
The conference, which
originated in New York,
brought together Federa-
tion leaders and Jewish
Agency Assembly delegates
via closed-circuit cable tele-
vision. It enabled par=
ticipating communities to
call in their questions and
maintain a dialogue with
the New York panel on is-
sues of concern for next
week's assembly - in
Jerusalem.
Martin E. Citrin, CJF
president and a former
presiderit of Detroit's
Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion, chaired the confer-
ence. Among the New
York panel was Max M.
Fisher, chairman of the
Jewish Agency. The tele-
conference was the first
of its type to be held for
Federation leadership.
