Weisberg-Sponsored Silverstein Recital
Marks Acclaim for SZ Cultural Events

Joseph Silverstein, hav-
ing acquired national
recognition among the most
accomplished violinists,
was here for a hero's wel-
come in his native city, in an
appearance Tuesday eve-
ning for the Peter and Clara
Weiberg-sponsored annual
concert. Not only was his
visit an occasion for
enthusiasm for his
excellently-performed pro-
gram. It served at the same
time to give expression to
wide appreciation for the
Cong. Shaarey Zedek Cul-
tural Commission's pro-
grams which embraced
numerous functions.
I. Murray Jacobs, current
chairman of the commis-
sion, in introductory wel-
coming remarks, took occa-
sion to indicate that the
4,100 in attendance helped
in celebrating the 15th an-
niversary of Shaarey Zedek
cultural events. His re-
marks were an invitation to
continuing cooperative
aims on a wide basis in the
uninterrupted programm-
ing. •
Dr. Harold Daitch, as
chairman of the music de-
partment of the Cultural
Commission, added - appre-
ciation for the wide aims of
the synagogue's educa-
tional media and their em-
bracing of community-wide
support and acclaim.
The impressive event,
and its capacity audi-
ence, seldom matched in
size for a violin recital,
had a number of special
features.
It was, occasion for Har-
vey Weisberg, son of the
sponsors of the annual con-
certs, to express his affec-
tions for his parents, with
special respect for his

father, Peter Weisberg,
whose interest in liturgical
music commenced when he
was a choir boy to the
famous Cantor Zadel.
Then there was the
encore — a Bach selection
played by Silverstein with-
out accompaniment as a
tribute to the memory of
Rabbi Morris Adler.
It was occasion for Rabbi
Irwin Groner to greet the
massive audience with a
Shana Tova because he
could not anticipate seeing
so large a congregation
again before Rosh Hashana.
The inclusion of the
Bloch "Ni Gun" in the
program was an added
musical treat.
In evidence also was the
brilliant piano accompani-
ment by Andrew Wolf.
The Silverstein program
included Brahms' "Sonata

No. 1; three works by
Kreisler: "Praeludium and
and Allegro," "Variations
on a Theme by Corelli," and
Hungarian Dance";

MN NI

John Holzer was the
best man. Ushers were
Robert Friedmann,
Michael Lester and Jon
Traines. Sandor Holzer
was the ring bearer.
The couple honeymooned
in Israel.
