Chief Ritenour said he
began a quiet campaign
two years ago requesting
that all street sales be
halted. JWV was notified
in a letter to then State
Commander William
Greenberg, the chief said.
The two men who were is-
sued tickets, Sol ,Levin,
commander of the Yetz-
Cohen Post of the JWV, and
Jim Smith of Ray-Dunham
Post of the VWF, were cited

Vespikov, 68, and her
daughter,. Veroniko, 43,
died of multiple stab
wounds. „Religious Affairs
Minister Yosef Burg has ca-
bled condolences to the Rus-
sian Orthodox Patriarch in
Moscow.
The police said they sus-
pected an "inside job" from
the start because there were
no signs of forced entry into
the cottage occupied by the
nuns, indicating that they
knew their assailant.

The nuns belonged to
the Russian Orthodox
convent, located near the
Hadassah Medical Cen-
ter in Ein Karem. The
mother and daughter
lived in a relatively re-
mote part of the monas-
tery which police said
was one of the reasons no
one heard any screams
from the victims' cottage.
The murder was dis-
covered by another nun,

who went to the cottage
after neither of the victims
came to morning prayers.
The shocked nun and her
fellow-nuns did not im-
mediately inform the police.
All of the nuns were
evacuated to the Soviet
Mission in Central
jerusalem where police
placed special guards.
The convent,_along with
other Christian institutions
in Jerusalem, recently be-
came the target of harass-
ment by fanatics; who
painted swastikas on the
convent walls with the slo-
gan, "Russians, go home."
The victims reportedly
filed a complaint a year ago
that unidentified persons ,
threw rocks at their cottage.

intersection in the city, with

85,000 cars per 'day. "Now
those traffic signals are
computerized and no one
can tell when they will
change. It is a dangerous
situation."
"I'm not trying to rain on
their parade," he said. "I'd
rather work with them then
against them. This (sales in.
the streets) has been a
long-standing tradition,
and there are so many
organizations. One. goes
ahead with the sales and
then the others do."
Ritenour said the two tic-
kets were the first issued in
Southfield.
