Begun Case: Judaism on Trial

By LISA GANN

Of the 119 recognized
nationalities in the USSR,
118 have their own schools,
in which instruction is con-
ducted in their national
language. Only the Jewish
sector, in size of population
the 12th of the Soviet
nationalities, is excluded.
In Russia proper, ac-
cording to official esti-
mates, there are well over
one million Jews. There
are only three
synagogues and one aged
rabbi to serve this com-
munity, and the last daily
prayer book was printed
20 years agp. A Soviet
Jewish child may not re-
ceive religious instruc-
tion unless he is among
the 10 students chosen by
the authorities to study in
the one official yeshiva in
Moscow.
There are in the Soviet
Union today two Yiddish
newspapers. Until 1977,
there was also one Jewish
theater company, but it was
never permitted to play be-
fore an audience in any
major city; neither was the
only Jewish orchestra.

JERUSALEM (JNI) —
The re-arrest and forthcom-
ing third trial of prisoner of
Zion Dr. Yosef Begun sig-
nifies much more than just
the intensification of the
internal Soviet campaign of
anti-Israel. It symbolizes
the trial of the Hebrew lan-
guage and official efforts to
suppress all Jewish cultural
rights in the Soviet Union.
The 50-year-old Jewish
mathematician and radio
engineer, a refusnik for 12
years, is an activist for aliya
and for the free study of
Jewish culture in the Soviet
Union.

And the situation is far
worse with regard to the
study of Hebrew. Formally,
Hebrew can be learned
within the framework of
Oriental studies at several
universities, but Jews are
categorically refused ad-

tions. All applications by
Jews to open _Hebrew
courses have been rejected,

What more does it take
to shock the Israeli public?"
Knesset Speaker Menahem
Savidor asked a special ses-
sion of aliya and absorption
committee May 2. Savidor
joined World Zionist Execu-
tive Chairman Arye Dul-

Education and Culture
Minister Zevulun Ham-
mer said that an hour-
long lesson in every Is-
raeli school will be dedi-
cated soon to Begun and
that youngsters will
compose telegrams about
Begun's plight to be sent
to children in Russia and
elsewhere.
With intensified Soviet
suppression of Jewish cul-
ture, Jewish emigration
statistics reached the lowest
point since the late 1960s.
Only 11 immigrants
reached Israel from the
Soviet Union last month,
from the 114 who arrived in
Vienna, WZO aliya and ab-
sorption department head

nounced May 2.
