HOW DO YOU clean a
hand-woven tapestry over
100 years old? . . . Very
carefully, says Irving Au-
slander of Custom Drapery
Cleaners on Jos. Campau in
Hamtramck . . . Iry has
been cleaning all kinds and
all ages for about 40 years
. . . even going to the library
to study tapestries . . . how
they're made and the fiber
content.
Biggest concern was to
minimize separation of fab-
ric since after so long a
period (one at Meadow
Brook Hall of Oakland U. he
cleaned is over 150 years
old) being exposed to the
elements, fibers lose
natural oils and handling
could cause splitting . . . Irv-
ing developed a method for
lubricating fabric with
a special oil . . . making it
more pliable, the colors
more vivid and prolonging
the tapestry life.
He is a trade member of
the American Society of
Interior Designers . . .
called upon frequently by
designers to help avoid
problems with finer house-
hold items like bedspreads,
wall hangings, drapes, etc.
Congrats . . . to Irving Au-
slander . . . on his 65th
birthday.

building he built in 1964 .. .
Quite a difference from the
alley where Jerry first
worked on autos in a rented
garage . . . and how he
would have loved having
that new bench system for
alignment of all cars, both
front wheel and regular.

and coordinated by Leah
Marks, who'll also do the
biggie, April 23, at Jewish
Community Center, an Is-
rael Independence Day
fashion show to raise money
for soliders of Israel . . . Her
March of Dimes benefit,

rating 20th year of Weight
Watchers, is a musical
production . . . today, 12

Wild show . . . and the big

Manela, daughter of Eunice
and Nate Manela, spent
their spring vacation from
U-M in California and were
at the TV show's taping.
When she called home
after the show, Mom and
Dad thought Sheryl was
kidding because before
leaving, Marilyn told her
that since she had sent for
tickets, they should share
the winnings . . . never
dreaming Sheryl would be
on the show . . . let alone
winning cash plus prizes of

The so-called Arabic
numeral system was
brought to the Arabs from
India in the Eighth Century
by a Jew. Jewish converts
took the system to Europe in
the 11th Century.

JERUSALEM (JTA) — A
group of opposition mem-
bers of the Knesset de-
manded last week that De-
fense Minister Mo'she Arens
reprimand outgoing Chief
of Staff Gen. Rafael Eitan
for remarks likening West
Bank Arabs to "drugged
roaches." Arens has indi-
cated he will not comply.
Eitan, due to retire later
this month, was quoted as
telling the Knesset's
Foreign Affairs and Secu-
rity Committee April 12
that for every stone-
throwing incident by Arab
youths on the West Bank,
10 new settlements should
be built, and "When we
have settled the land all the
Arabs will be able to do
about it is to scurry around
like drugged roaches in a
bottle."
In a telegram to Arens,
the MKs charged that "The
Chief of Staff caused consid-
erable damage to the image
of the Israel Defense Force.
These comments constitute
a shocking and severe phe-
nomenon which cannot be
ignored by whoever has
concern for the image of
society in Israel and the
image of the IDF."
Likud MK Dror
Seigermann said he was
shocked. He said he had
returned an invitation to
attend a "salute" for
Eitan event because the
general's comments
made him unworthy of
such a salute.
Arens, in a television
interview last night, re-

fused comment except to say
that Eitan was a "national
hero" and he did not want to
mar his last days in the
army.
