people.
Rabbi Jack Goldman
stressed that this is the only
Dunkin' Donuts shop, in
Michigan to which the cer-
tification applies. Extensive
alterations in the ingre-
dients had to be made. Spe-
cial arrangements were
made with Dunkin' Donuts
headquarters in Randolph,
Mass., which has some
kosher outlets in other
states.
Although not without
precedent, the kosher Dun-
kin' Donuts shop is looked
upon as ari experiment, both
by the Metropolitan Kas-
hruth Council and the Dun-
kin' Donuts organization,
according to Rabbi
Goldman. If it succeed _ s in
' Michigan, as it has
elsewhere, this shop will
remain kosher _under rab-

Plaque Memorializes Isaacs

The Jewish Historical
Society of Michigan, in
cooperation with the United
Hebrew Schools, has pre-
pred a plaque honoring the
memory of Mr. Bernard
Isaacs, the first superinten-
dent of the United Hebrew
Schools.
The plaque has been
placed next to the sculpture
which was provided by a
special committee to honor
Mr. Isaacs. The plaque
reads:
"Dedicated to the memory
of Bernard Isaacs who came
to Detroit in 1919 to or-
ganize and direct the
United Hebrew Schools. For
the next 35 years thousands
of young people- were edu-
cated in their cultural and
religious traditions under
his inspired leadership.
"He was a pioneer among
American Jewry in
encouraging the teaching of
Hebrew as a modern lan-

noted Hebrew author. He
was revered throughout the

from Rabbi Benjamin
Shandalov, administra-
tive had of the Chicago
Rabbinical Council, who
arranged for a Dunkin'
Donuts shop in Chicago
to come under the super-
vision of that organiza-
tion. That shop was so
successful that its prod-
uction increased during
the first six months by 20
percent. Now, there are
two kosher Dunkin'
Donuts shops operating
in Chicago under super-
vision of the Chicago
Rabbinical Council.
Rabbi ,Shariddlov as-
serted that the kosher Dun-
kin' Donuts shops .did not
interfere with other kosher
bakeries in Chicago. On the
contrary, he said, the donut
production of the latter in-
creased as a result of more
demand.
Rabbi Goldman pointed
out that such an operation
could be managed only if the
proprietor were a gentile,
since the Dunkin' Donuts
shops are open 24-hours-a-
day, seven-days-a-week,.

cial occasions. The shop is
actually a small diner
which can accommodate 36
and caters parties.
One of its specialties, as
a result of its kosher cer-
tification, is that it now
serves seven varieties of
soups. However, Rabbi
Goldman stressed, every-
thing in. the shop —
donuts, cakes, pastries
and soup — is dairy.
The shop has been cer-
tified kosher since March 1.
However, none of its prod-
ucts will be kosher for
Passover.

kashrut for his Dunkin' Donuts shop from Rabbi Jack
