Ex-Detroiter Named Official
Translator of Inquiry Report

Rabbi James I. Gordon of
Young Israel of Oak-Woods,
and Mrs. Gordon, have rea-
son to be proud — their son
Bezalel was asked to be the
official translator of the
findings of the Israel in-
quiry commission.
Gordon, head of the news-
room at the Israel Govern-
ment Press Office in
Jerusalem, was loaned to
the Kahan Commission of
Inquiry on the Beirut mas-
sacre to be the spokesman
for the commission.
According to the
Jerusalem Post, the job of
translating the findings
took 55 hours. Gordon was
assisted by five translators,
a typist and a word proc-
essor operator.
The translators' were
native English speakers
who were either current
or former employees of
the Israel Government
Press Office. The report
was made in Hebrew, but
according to Gordon, the
official document was to
be in English.
Preventing leaks was the
major concern of the team.
Gordon said, "When we got

the material just after the
end of the Sabbath, we knew
the importance and the sen-
sitivity of what we were do-
ing. We resolved that there
would be no leaks from our
team, and there weren't
any. As far as I know, even
the prime minister was un-
aware of what we were do-
ing."
Because of the sensitive
nature of the report, the
team worked with "great
precision," the Post re-
ported. A first draft was
made and after careful cor-
rection the final text was
prepared. When the three
principals of the commis-
sion,. Supreme Court
President Yitzhak Kahan,
Supreme Court Justice
Aharon Barak and Maj.
Gen. (res.) Yona Efrat had
signed the translation, Gor-
don released it to the press.
Gordon came to Israel
three years ago. He speaks
several languages, includ-
ing French and Greek. He
studied Hebrew in the U.S.
and spent a year in Israel
when he was in college.
