cal fellowship) to the Israeli
invasion of Lebanon. While
he participates in the
group's dicussions, Fac
kenheim is critical of their
posture: "The Christians in
the group support Israel's
existence but only on conch-
tions which they define as
appropriate, namely, that
when the Jewish state is at-
tacked, Jews must turn the
other cheek."
Fackenheim said he be-
lieves strongly that the
magnitude of the
Holocaust requires a rad-
ical new re-thinking of
traditional Jewish ver-
ities. He uses the term
"Tikun Olam" ("mending
the world"), to express
the need for a reformula-
tion of both Christian and
Jewish spiritual values.
In his book Fackenheim
stresses the fact that the
"Tikun" began during the
Holocaust itself. He cites
the activity of the anti-Nazi
"White Rose" student group
(whose members were exe-
cuted by the Gestapo) as an
example of the righteous-
ness that surfaced during
those terrible times.

Aside from a handful of
sensitive Christian
thinkers — Franklin Littel,
Roy and Alice Eckardt and
Krister Stendhal — the vast
majority of Christian
theologians are, according
to Fackenheim, insensitive
to the implications of the
Holocaust.
Fackenheim cites two
examples of the moral call-
ousness he detects in the
Christian world. The Fope's
welcome to Yasir Arafat is
one instance.
The second concerns the
