Ethiopian government dis-
approval, in an article in the
Jewish Week-American
Examiner.
In
Addis
Ababa,
Ethiopia's capital, the Ban-
netts were given several ex-
cuses why they could not
visit the remote Falasha vil-
lages. They were told it was
the rainy season and that
the Jews were celebrating
holidays to which outsiders
were not permitted.
Without permission,
they hired a guide to take
them to Gondar, one of
the main Falasha vil-
lages. They were warmly
greeted by the villagers
and their rabbi, who at
the Bannetts' request
showed them their
prayerbooks and Bibles.
The Bannetts wanted to
leave the Falashas a sum of
money, but it was politely
refused. The rabbi instead
asked the couple to work for
the return of ORT (the
Organization for Rehabili-
tation through Training) to
complete a school in Gon-
dar. The Ethiopian gov-
ernment had banned ORT
when the school was half-
finished.
