year process that left him
without his fiancee, without
a job or hope for employ-
ment and with an addiction
to barbiturates.
"I honestly believe that I
was committing slow
suicide," reflects the articu-
late 31-year-old New
Yorker who has been
enrolled for the last five
months in the Habad Resi-
dential Drug Rehabilitation
Treatment Program in Los
Angeles.
Henry began taking fior-
inal at the age of 28 to com-
bat migraine headaches
under a doctor's prescrip-
tion. He had never ex-
perimented with any drug
before, but in the three
years following his initial
prescription, he was in and
out of detoxification units
three times. At one point
Henry was seeing 10 differ-
ent doctors to get
prescriptions for the drug he
needed.
During his third time in
a "detox unit" his doctor
suggested a program he
had heard of on the west
coast — a residential
treatment program run
by the Habad Lubavitch
organization.
The Habad Center is the
only residential program in
the world under Jewish au-
spices to combat drug abuse.
Dr. Stephen Bailey is the
center's director.
The programs' results
have been phenomenal.
Nearly 60 percent of those
who enter the center are
cured of the drug abuse,
nearly three times the na-
tional average for similar
programs. Dr. Bailey hesi-
tates to cite figures due to
the complexity of following
up on those who leave the
program.
"The majority of the cases
that walk through the door
are suffering from poly-
drug abuse, that is a mix-
ture of prescription drug
abuses generally combined
with the use of cocaine,"
said Dr. Bailey.
Clients receive inten-
sive individual and voca-
tional counseling. Social
interaction plays a big
part in the therapy. "We

TEL AVIV (JTA) — V. S.
Naipaul, the 51-year-old
writer born in Trinidad of
Indian Brahmin parentage
and a long-time resident of
Britain, will receive the
1983 Jerusalem Prize for
literature, at the Jerusalem
International Book Fair
April 27.
Among Naipaul's best-
known works are, "An Area
of Darkness" (1964) about
his first confrontation with
the India his grandfather
left; and his novels, "In a
Free State" (1971), "Guer-
rillas" (1975), and "A Bend
in the River" (1979).
His latest book, "Among
the Believers" (1981), is a

and the increasing mili-
tancy of Islam in other
countries.
are a therapeutic com-
munity and everybody
has to worry about the
feedback from the next
guy in here," said Dr.
Bailey.
"We can usually tell after
about the first six weeks
whether a person can ac-
complish what is expected of
him in this program and
about a quarter of the
people leave before the first
six weeks are up," Dr.
Bailey admits. "They some-
times go to other programs
which are less demanding."
The center is non-
sectarian and there have
been some success stories
with gentiles who have
completed the program but
applicants are told at the
initial interview that the
group sponsoring the center
is a Jewish agency and that
there is an element of the
program that emphasizes
Jewish cultural values.
"There is nothing reli-
gious that is imposed on
anybody here," Dr. Bailey
insists, although the facility
itself does observe the
Jewish sabbath. There are
no organized activities that
violate the Sabbath but the
individual clients are free to
do as they please in their
rooms as long as they have
respect for those who wish
to observe.
The Habad program is
restricted to males and
Dr. Bailey stresses that
there is a need in Los
Angeles for a women's
facility but thus far the
funds aren't available.
Clients commit to the
program for a minimum of
nine months and the cost is
$1,800 per month. Accord-
ing to Dr. Bailey, nearly 70
percent of those admitted
cannot afford the payments.
The deficit is made up by
private donations and some
grants from the National
Institute for Drug Abuse
and other federal programs.

Maxwell Houses Coffee
Is AlritrniMicome.
"Breaking bread" as a symbol of
peace, friendship, warmth and hos-
pitality is a tradition that is as old as
the Bible itself.
Although far from being as old as
the Bible, Maxwell House® Coffee
has been part of that tradition for
over a half a century. The reason is
simple: the full-pleasant aroma and
great tasting,
satisfying flavor of
Maxwell House®
blends right in with the good food
and hospitality that is part of
inviting people into your home.
So, no matter what your p reference—
instant or ground---when you pour
Maxwell House you pour hospi-
tality. At its warmest ...consistently
cup after cup after cup.
