I

Jewish leaders, noted rab-
bis and intellectuals. These
articulate people spoke
about Israel, its security, Its
society, the Diaspora, its
problems and the relation-
ship between the Diaspora
and Israel.
Israelis do not lack candor
and forthrightness, not only
between the political par-
ties but also between var-
ious segments of its society
and within its political par-
ties.
I was impressed by
some of the young and
upcoming leadership in-
cluding women and
Sephardis and that the
older veterans were
treated with respect and
listened to.
There was great ineffi-
ciency. It is almost impossi-
ble to operate by consensus
where there is such compe-
tition between people and
parties for positions,
portfolios, patronage and
power. It is amazing that
there was so much final'
agreement in the end.
I know no other forum of
this magnitude where re-.
nown Zionist leaders and
intellectuals of Diaspora
Jewry and Israeli. Jewry can
and do speak out about their
perceptions of the relation-
ship and the needs and obli-
gations of the Diaspora and
Israel each to its own society
and to each other.

Bias in Mexicb
Meeting Topic

NEW YORK — The
American Jewish Commit-
tee is seeking to help solve
serious problems of anti-
Semitism facing the Jewish
community of Guadalajara,
Mexico.
Sergio Nudelstejer, direc-
tor of AJCommittee's Office
for Mexico and Central
America, has reported that
he has discussed the activi-
ties of extreme right-wing
groups that frequently dis-
tribute anti-Semitic prop-
aganda with Bernardo
Weitzener, president of the
Central Jewish Committee,
the leading body of Mexican
Jewry, located in Mexico
City.
In the past few months,
Nudelstejer revealed, the
Guadalajara Jewish
community has suffered
two serious attacks. The
first was a bomb placed
near the synagogue,
which was discovered
and deactivated. The
second was an attack on
the Jewish cemetery, in
which a number of
tombstones were de-
stroyed.
The second largest city in
Mexico, Guadalajara has
become the center of groups
distributing vicious anti-
Semitic material,
Nudelstejer stated. The
Jewish community of
Guadalajara numbers 220
families.

Synagogue Hit
for Services
in the Church

Editor, The Jewish News: •
I am relieved and thank-
ful to the Almighty that no
lives were lost in the fire
that destroyed the Beth Ab-
raham Hillel Moses.
In some ways more dis-
tressing than the conflagra-
tion was the decision to hold
Sabbath services in a
church. Such a move mocks
Jewish law and tradition
and tends, albeit unwit-
tingly, to strengthen the
forces of assimilation which
so insidiously eat away at
the infrastructure of Jewish
unity.
Most shocking was Rabbi
Schnipper's declaration
that G-d's Presence could be
found in the church just as it
is in the remains of the
synagogue.
If the rabbi actually be-
lieves this then he has de-
secrated the Divine Name
and denied the unique-
ness of the Jewish
people. I hope and as-
sume that he was just
engaging in emotional
hyperbole.
May G-d grant to the
leaders of Beth Abraham
Hillel Moses the wisdom
and strength to examine
their motives and deeds and
to place the good of Klal
Yisrael above the ephem-
eral needs of their congre-
gation.

The victim, Esther Ohana
of Beit Shean, was hit when
the vehicle, driven by a
senior army officer, was
passing through Dahariya
village on the Beer-sheva-
Hebron highway. The rock
was thrown from behind the
wall of a nearby school.

The army clamped a cur-
few on the village and 10
suspects were arrested for
questioning. Israeli ve-
hicles were stoned Saturday
on the same road but
further north, near
Dahaishe refugee camp.
Similar attacks occurred in
the area a month ago.
