Israel Debates
Abortion Issue

JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
There are 24,000 abortions
a year in Israel, said Dr.
Haim Sadan, the Agudat
Yisrael aide to the Health
Minister, at a meeting of the
Knesset Social Affairs
Committee.
He created a storm when
he referred to abortions as
"the final solution."
Aguda MK Shmuel Hal-
pert interjected that social
workers are the main cause
of abortions. Prof. David
Serr, of Tel Hashomer Hos-
pital, said that the best way
to cut down the number of
abortions is to offer families
financial assistance.
He said that the rate of
abortions at Tel Hashomer
has remained the same —
about 30 a month — as be-
fore the repeal of the "social
clause" of the abortion law
in January 1980. Dr. Serr
said there has been a rise in
the number of women who
claim that their husband is
not the father of the child.
This is one of the grounds on
which abortion committees
can approve the operation.

Program Aids
Troubled Youth

JERUSALEM (JNI) —
More than 100 delinquents
and drop-outs will take part
in an 11-month program to
be started this year in
Jerusalem, Natanya and
Ashkelon by the Jewish
Agency's project renewal
department and Labor
Ministry. Non-profit con-
struction corporations will
be founded to employ young
men from disadvantaged
backgrounds who have had
trouble finding or keeping a
job.
