Detroiter's Aliya Pioneering

(Continued from Page 1)
"I have visited them sev-

eral times and I had a feel-
ing of great satisfaction to
see that our work in
America did bring fruit.
There are over 50 of them
nicely established in tents
and barracks in Hadera.
They are known as good
workers, and are preferred
by employers in the colony."
"They really lift to a high
point the reputation of
American youth which was
running low in this country.
It is amazing how well they
became acclimatized in
their new environment. It

may be safely said that they
did better in this respect
than even our groups from
Eastern Europe. During the
three years since their aliya
started, only three of them
went back to America,
which is really a very low
percentage. They have es-
tablished a nice initiative in
the economic field . ."
Finally, in. 1937, the land
for the kibutz was acquired
in .Juara in the Hills of Ep-
hraim, and on July 4 of that
year, American Indepen-
dence Day, these pioneers
were able to establish a
"Tower and Stockade"
settlement. Kibutz Ein
HaShofet today numbers
more than 600 families, has
extensive agricultural hold-
ings and a factory for pro-
ducing electrical
appliances. It was the first
of 33 kibutzim which have
significant North American
aliya groups as their core.

The honored guest at
this moving celebration
at Ein HaShofet was Yit-
zhak Navon, president of
the state of Israel. "It is
not wrong," he noted, "to
celebrate a jubilee be-
cause it is, in fact, a door
of hope relating to an
ideal in which we believe:
pioneering aliya from the
North American coun-
tries. However signific-
ant this aliya has been
quality wise, we can al-
ways hope that the num-
bers will increase. If now
there are several
thousand olim from
North America, then this
number could be doubled
and trebled. That is our
fondest hope."

"The great drama in
Jewish history," President
Navon emphasized, "is the
settlement of this land
fueled by that vision and
those ideals which inspired
the olim from the North
American countries. Yet
mere living here is not suffi-
cient," Navon quoted David
Ben-Gurion, "unless we
create an exemplary state,
one which will stress the
quality of life, place an em-
phasis on the uniqueness of
the society, and be a society
to which our youth will be
attracted."
Quite significant is the
fact that today almost 25
percent of North American
olim are settling on kibut-
zim. In 1981, out of 2,100
North American olim, 470
chose this option. Therefore,
the jubilee celebration is
only a milestone in the con-
tinuing process which has -
not abated since it began 50
years ago.
The Canadian ambas-
sador to Israel, Vernon
Turner, offered a blessing in
Hebrew for the occasion,
praising the kibutz and the
idealism it represents. The
closing words of Ambas-
sador Lewis were a hopeful
prophecy, yet pragmatic, "I
wish you peace, more olim
and more sons and daugh-
ters to carry on your vital
work."

The most valuable of all
talents is that of never
using two words when one
will do.
