Genealogical Schwar(t)z-Hunt in Detroit
Editor, The Jewish News:
Although I have lived in
New York City my entire
life and have never even vis-
ited Detroit, I have com-
municated with more
Schwartzes of your city than
anyone else in the world.
I am a Jewish
genealogist.
One of my great-grand-
mothers was a Schwartz.
Another great-grand-
mother was a Schwarz. (A
first cousin with the latter
maiden name went through
college with the nickname
"T-less.") Add a strand of
family lore that my grand-
parents may have been re-
lated and I was confronted
with a tidy genealogical
mystery that could be
solved, possibly . . . only by
the Schwartzes of Detroit.
Two clues existed at the
outset: 1. in 1933, one
Jacob Schwartz, "a rela-
tive" from the States, vis-
ited and dated Bertl
Schwarz (my late mother)
in Brandenburg, Ger-
many.
2. While
my
grandparents were mur-
dered during the War, and
my mother experienced a
good deal of its worst as-
pects, her oldest brother
was sent to "the States" in
1938. Uncle Max Schwarz
carried with him an address
book of all our relatives,
friends, relatives of friends
and friends of relatives in
this country. That slim vol-
ume, which contained
numerous genealogical
nuggets, never was used by
Max on arrival and
gathered dust for over 40

Another Look
at the Massacre
Editor, The Jewish News:
The massacre which took
place in Beirut was shown
on television on Jan. 7 from
10 p.m. to 11 p.m. It can be
called an example of indif-
ference or neglect by many
countries.
The question arises, why
did the United States recall
the Marines two weeks
ahead of time before the
specific date which was as-
signed for the recall?
The American television
broadcaster stated that the
United States did not want
another Vietnam. So why
were they sent there in the
first place?
The Israeli army, no
doubt, was being watched
by those who massacred
hundreds of innocent
women and children.
The Tel Aviv television
broadcaster announced and
was shown the demonstra-
tion by hundreds of Tel Aviv
citizens, protesting against
the massacre.
This incident in itself is a
big drawback to peace.
This is the view of a
Jewish War Veteran.

years.
One entry in this address
book read: "Jacob Schwartz,
Lenoir Dress Shop, 4838
Michigan Ave., Detroit,
Michigan." (Please catch
that "le noir" "schvartz"
black humor.) Here was the
lynchpin to determine if my
grandparents were related.
The current Detroit direc-
tory contains no entry for
our dress shop, an antici-
pated disappointment. So I
began to become acquainted
with the Detroit Schwart-
zes. The phone book listed
two Jacob Schwartzes but
neither was mine. A gentle
Jack Schwartz of Votrobeck
Drive demurred that he was
"an old fruit peddler."
The J. Schwartzes all
turned out to be Jacks,
but not the right one. On a

Answer for
Rabbi Schindler
Editor, The Jewish News:
Apparently, a brilliant
rabbi has conjured up a
phobia — setting up a straw
man and then demolishing
him.
In his New York Times
article (Op-Ed, Jan. 3)
"More than just a part of Is-
rael," Rabbi Alexander M.
Schindler preaches that "we
must love and support Is-
rael . . . in our love, we have
become a largely one-issue
community."
Essentially, he fearg "the
vicarious participation in
the life of Israel" might
siphon off the prerequisites
for a "strong Jewish com-
munity in the Diaspora."
poor hunch, I sidet-
racked , to phone the
nearly 40 Js, Jacks and
Jacobs in Miami, but I
only gained a larger
phone bill. Thus I re-
turned to Detroit with the
hope that Jack at least
had family there.
Shakespeare urged, "kill
all the lawyers first," so I
modified his verb and wrote
all Schwartz attorneys in
Detroit. Uniformly, the dis-
claimer of all relationship
was cordial . . . and lawyer-
like: "If I can be of further
assistance to you, please do
not hesitate to contact me."
So I turned to all the
Jewish-sounding first-
name .Schwartzes in De-
troit. Their response rate
approached 100 percent. All
were friendly and some
were cute. Louis A.
Schwartz wrote "no rela-
tionship whatsoever .. .
wish you luck." Bernard
Schwartz puckishly scrib-
bled: "My relatives settled
in Avon, Ohio in 1833. If
your records take you back
to Avon, Ohio, then please
let me know . ."
Declaimed C.M.
Schwartz: "I do not know of
nor have I ever heard of
Jack Schwartz." Jack H.
Schwartz of Oak Park con-
soled me: "I know how dif-
ficult this project can be-
come. My wife's family has a
similar project going.
Thank goodness I only col-
lect stamps and coins."
A very typical response
was this one from a
Schwartz who failed to
sign off: "This is to inform
•
His fears are ground- you that we are not re-
less. It is precisely the in- lated to Jack Schwartz
. We think this idea is
fusion of Jewishness
eminating from Israel great. Keep on the
which plays a great role search."
I did. A semi-break in the
in the growth of new syn-
case
came with a letter from
agogues, the great ad-
Erwin
E. Schwartz of
vances in the intellectual
and cultural modus viv- Dearborn. After apologizing
endi of American Jewry. for not being related and
Note the big increase in being unable to locate Jack,
Jewish day schools Erwin offered that he and
sparked by Zionist fer- his wife remembered shop-
ping at Lenoir's "years
vor.
We commend his wel-
tanschauung, his concern
for humanity — but not his
worry about a "spiritual
ghetto." If Jewish spiritual-
ity wanes, it could not be at-
tributed to a disparate ac-
tivity favoring Israel — it
would be a malaise preva-
lent in all religions.
We suffer over the mur-
derous world gangup on Is-
rael — even the uncons-
cionable detractions by
prominent Jews in public
pronouncement (including
an Israeli general).
Rabbi Schindler urges us
to love Israel as he does; but
his erroneous intimation is
that this love must not
weaken "our own identity
and integrity."
I hear a despairing cry:
"Et tu, Rabbi!"
S. Norman Gourse
New York
back." This constituted the
first solid evidence that the
shop had, in fact, existed.
In mid-October 1982, I
tapped a dynamo in the per-
sona of Toby Schwartz
Kiritsis. Among other tid-
bits, as part of a two-page
typewritten letter (the first
of a couple), she supplied me
with a ripped-out page from
the North Woodward direc-
tory listing the Schwartzes
there, the address of Michi-
gan's Jewish War Veterans
and, assuming the worst,
the names and addresses of
your two Jewish funeral
homes.
She added: "Try placing a
notice in The Detroit Jewish
News for lost relatives. It
works. I now have two Rus-
sian cousins that I never
knew about until 11/2 years
ago."
On Nov. 19, 1982, I went
public with the following
advertisement on Page 52
of The Jewish News:
'LENOIR DRESS SHOP
JACK SCHWARTZ.
Solely for genealogical
reasons, I am attempting
to locate or learn about a
Jack Schwartz who
worked , at the Lenoir
Dress Shop, 4838 Michi-
gan Ave." My name and
address were appended.
The response electrified
my research. A non-
Schwartz, Raymond
Goldman; advised that
"Jake" Schwartz moved, in
the late '59s to Phoenix!
(From "Jacob" I had pro-
gTessed to "Jack" and now I
was following "Jake"!) "As a
young man and new to this
country," Mr. Goldman also
offered, Jake resided with a
certain Zolkower family.
The very night I received
this letter I phoned the Zol-
kowers. Subsequently I
spoke with another De-
troiter, Albert King, who
owned a shoe store next to
Jake's dress shop. Yet no
one really knows Jake's
exact whereabouts these
last 20 years or that of his
brother Louis or sister
Pearl.
Thus far, two months of
intermittent assault on
Phoenix has been com-
pletely unavailing. Hope-
fully though Arizonans will
be as friendly, helpful .. .
and entertaining, as the
Schwartzes of Detroit!

Rambam Month
DENVER (JTA) — Gov.
Richard Lamm has pro-
claimed January as
Maimonides Paideia Month
in Colorado, noting that
Jan. 5 marked the 778th
anniversary of the death of
the noted physician-
scholar.
Paideia refers to the
Maimonides concept that
"speech, teaching and
learning are instruments
for promoting peace among
mankind."
The governor's proclama-
tion cited- the work of Dr.
William Elefant, a former
educational director of the
Denver BMH congrega-
tional Hebrew and religious
schools, who for the past 20
years has been teaching at
the School of Education in
Bar-Ilan University in
Ramat Gan, Israel.
