Adat Shalom Series to Focus Rabbis Declare February
on Hollywood Image of Jews Kashrut Education Month

The Adat Shalom Adult
Study Commission will pre-
sent a three-part film series
on the celluloid image of the
Jew generated by the
American film industry
6:30 p.m. Jan. 23, Feb. 6 and
Feb. 13 in the synagogue.
Dan Greenberg, professor
of communications at the
Orchard Ridge campus of
Oakland Community Col-
lege, will introduce the
films and lead the dis-
cussions which follow.
Rabbi Efry Spectre will also
participate in the dis-
cussions.
"Hollywood's Image of the
Jew," will depict early film
stereotypes with "Cohen's
Insurance Scheme" and
other turn-of-the-century
shorts, and with Al Jolson's

"Quality at

1927 "Jazz Singer" on Jan.
23.
The gradual shedding
of film stereotypes will be
the topic on Feb. 6 when
"Gentleman's Agree-
ment" (1948) will be
screened. Contemporary
sensitivity toward ethnic
groups and a realistic
portrayal of their prob-
lems will highlight the
final meeting of the series
on Feb. 13, when Bertolt
Brecht's "The Jewish
Wife (1978) and "Hester
Street" (1975) will be pre-
sented.
There is no charge, The
series will meet in the syna-
gogue's youth lounge. Re-
freshments will be served.

WASHINGTON — In a
letter to the editor of the
Washington Post, Swedish
Ambassador Wilhelm
Wachtmeister took col-
uminist George F. Will to
task for his criticism of the
Swedish government's han-
dling of the Raoul Wallen-
berg case.
Wallenberg, the Swedish
diplomat who rescued
thousands of Jews from
Hungary during the
Holocaust, was jailed by the
Soviet Union following
World War II. The Russians
claim Wallenberg died in
1947, but there have been
reports that he is still alive
and being held captive in a
Soviet prison.
"The Swedish govern-
ment has pursued this mat-
ter with a vigor and perse-
verance that probably ex-
ceeds what any government
has done for one of its citi-
zens," Wachtmeister said,
responding to Will's charge
that Sweden's "lethargy"
toward the case was unfor-
tunate.

The month of February
has been designated by the
Council of Orthodox Rabbis
as "Kashrut Education
Month" and the Merkaz will
make available a 16mm
movie entitled "The Kosher
Home" to local groups, con-
gregations and organiza-
tions.
This film will be shown to
Jewish students in day
schools and afternoon
schools throughout metro
Detroit. At many schools,
Rabbi Beryl Broyde will
conduct a question-and-
answer forum as part of the
program.
In order to acquaint
laymen and students with
the entire spectrum of
Jewish traditions and laws
relating to kosher meat
preparation, the Merkaz
also will arrange for special
tours to the "backroom" of a
kosher meat market and to
a packing house for a first
hand look at the shehita
(slaughtering) process.
For information on the
film and other Kashrut
Education Month pro-
grams, call the Merkaz
