LONDON (ZINS) — An
Israeli historian, Dr. Zeev
Gelber, recently found a
1944 letter from Winston
Churchill recommending to
the British Colonial Office
that Chaim Weizmann be
appointed British High
Commissioner in Palestine.
Weizmann, later first
president of Israel, was at
the time head of the World
Zionist Organization.
Churchill conceded there
would be problems with the
appointment, but said
Weizmann would be fair to
the Arabs and Jews.

troit Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Pre-
senting the award to Varon is Darlene Krato,
president of the Metro Detroit Chapter.

Aliya Up 11 Percent in 1982

JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
Immigration to Israel in the
first 10 months of 1982 in-
creased 11.2 percent over
the same period in 1981, ac-
cording to the Jewish Agen-
cy's Immigration and Ab-
sorption Department. The
overall figures were 11,092
immigrants compared to 9,
976 for the first months of
1981.
In the 10-month period,
only 630 immigrants ar-
rived from the Soviet
Union. Romanian aliya
showed an increase, with
1,137 immigrants in the
first 10 months of 1982 as
compared to 726 during the
same period of the previous
year. Thousands more of the
30,000 Romanian Jews
applied for exit permits.
Meanwhile, the Central
Bureau of Statistics reports
that emigration from Israel
is slowing down. According
to the latest trends only

HONOLULU (JTA) —
The Hawaii Jewish Welfare
Fund has changed its name
to the Jewish Federation of
Hawaii. Its board said that
the agency is now funding
more local programs "that
we hope will involve the
community as a whole."

Cleveland Aids
Jewish Education

CLEVELAND (JTA) — A
new and comprehensive ap-
proach to supporting Jewish
education at Cleveland con-
gregational schools has led
to a grant of more than
$107,000 for each of the
next three years by the
Jewish Community Federa-
tion from its endowment
fund.
The grant provides an
enrichment fund of up to
$15,000 annually for each
participating congregation
which can use the money for
a variety of creative pro-
grams, including parent
education, intensive Jewish
camping or educational re-
treats.
