turing as well, and almost
every kibutz today has a
small factory to supplement
its income.
"In addition," Paz goes
on, "kibutzniks, unlike
other communalists, did
not withdraw from the
larger society around
them. They were always
involved in the govern-

tic, social and intellectual
life of the country. This
kept the collective set-
tlements from becoming
ingrown, isolated and
fatally dull."
Paz, who himself has di-
vided his life between teach-
ing and farming at his
kibutz, adds one more point:
"The kibutz always takes
into account the individual:
Yossi just isn't as fast a
worker as Haim, or Moshe
feels he must have violin
lessons. To the best of its
ability, the group tries to
accommodate everybody's
needs and inclinations.
Otherwise they would sim-
ply drive people away."
Today, nearly 75 years
after the pioneers of De-
gania began clawing arable
land out of the mudflats
around the Sea of Galilee,
most of Israel's kibutzim are
prospering. Many have de-
veloped in different direc-
tions. In addition to farm-
ing, some of them operate
science-based industries,
while others may run pas-
toral tourist guest-houses.
Some are religious in char-
acter, while others remain
staunchly secular.
Some 10 percent of the
kibutzim have abandoned
the old idea of communal
child-raising and now have
housing units for entire
families.
No one receives a sal-
ary, but everyone re-
ceives an annual and
equal expense account
to do with.,as he or she
wishes, as long as it does
not raise one's status
above everyone else's. A
kibutz member can take a
holiday, for example — or
buy any sort of shirt he
likes — but he could not,
for example, buy a car
(the kibutz in any event
has its own fleet of ye-
hicks for shared use).

The rest of the kibutz pro-
fits are devoted to the de-
velopment of the settlement
as a whole — new tractors,
for example, or a new com-
munity swimming pool.
Since the workers own ev-
erything collectively,
everyone benefits. And
since the employees are
their own employers, there
are no disputes between
labor and management. All
decisions are determined by
democratic votes at regular
"town meetings."
The concept fascinates
outsiders. Thousands of
volunteers from all over the
world come to kibutzim
each year to help with the
harvests and to learn about
this unique form of settle-
ment. Planners from un-
derdeveloped countries
study the kibutz to see how
it might be adaptable to
thier own situations. And
psychologists probe the life
of kibutz children.

prised to learn that less

zim, and kibutzniks are the
first to admit that the col-
lective way of life is not to
everyone's taste. But small
though their number may
be, Israel owes a great deal
to kibutz settlers who over
the past century have made
a profound historical, eco-
nomic and social contribu-
tion to their country.
