Rabinic Stories in 'Our Masters Taught'
BY ALLEN A. WARSEN
"A pagan once asked
Rabbi Jashua ben
Qarechah: 'Why of all
things did God choose the
humble thornbush as the
place from which to speak to
Moses?'
"The Rabbi replied: 'If He
had chosen a carob tree or a
mulberry tree, you would
have asked me the same
question. Yet it is impossi-
ble to let yo go away
empty-handed. That is why
I am telling you that God
chose the humble
thornbush — to teach you
that there is no place on
earth bereft of the Divine
Presence, not even a
thornbush."
The above agada is repro-
duced from "Our Masters
Taught ("Tonu Rabonon"):
Rabbinic Stories and Say-
ings" translated and edited
by Jacob J. Petuchowski,
prof. of Judeo-Christian
studies at Hebrew-Union
College - Jewish Institute of
Religion in Cincinnati. It is
published by Crossroad.
Prof. Petuchowski, it is
fair to note, translated
the stories and
aphorisms from their
original sources: the
Talmud, the Bible and the
Midrash.
Uniquely, the author "re-
nders the world agada as
`narrative theology.' " He
points out, however, that
there is no systematic
Jewish theology, and quotes
the late Prof. Solomon
Schechter, who wrote:
"With God as a reality, Re-
velation as a fact, the Torah
as a rule of life, and the hope
of Redemption as a most
vivid expectation, they (the
rabbis) felt no need for for-
mulating their dogmas into
creeds."
It is worthy of note that
Prof. Petuchowski arranged
the narratives topically and
gave them titles. The stories
are meaningful, intellectu-
ally delightful and illus-
trate moral truths. Exam-
ples follow:
Rabbi Judah used to say:
Ten hard things were
created in the world. The
rock is hard, but iron can
split it. Iron is hard, but fire
can soften it. Fire is hard,
but water can extinguish it.

When is the soul placed in
man — at the moment of con-
ception, or only after the em-
bryo has been formed?"
Rabbi Judah answered:
"When the embryo has been
formed."
Antoninus objected, "Can
a piece of meat be kept un-
salted for three days without
putrefying? One would,
therefore, have to assume
that the life-sustaining soul
is implanted in the human
being already at the moment
of his inception."
Then Rabbi Judah said:
"Antoninus has taught me
this matter. Scripture actu-
ally supports him, when it
says in Job: Tour provi-
dence has watched over my
spirit."

Water is hard, but the
clouds can bear it away. The
clouds are hard, but the
winds can scatter them. The
wind is hard, but the human
body can withstand it. The
human body is hard, but
fear can break it.
Fear is hard, but wine can
banish it. Wine is hard, but
sleep can diminish its effect.
Death is stronger than all,
but "Charity delivers from
death."
It is remarkable, the He-
brew world "zedakah"
means both charity and
righteousness.
The following agada
seems timely in the current
social climate:
Antoninus asked Rabbi
(Judah the Patriarch):
