Weizmann: Unique Diplomat

By LISA GANN

JERUSALEM (JNI) —
Thirty years have now
passed since the death of
Chaim Weizmann, Israel's
first president. Weizmann
achieved a supreme iden-
tification with his own
people while at the same
time lucidly communicat-
ing their 2,000 years of
agony and hope to the out-
side world.
Perhaps no one today can
speak on behalf of world
Jewry as authoritatively, as
genuinely in the Jewish
spirit as did Weizmann. The
internationally renowned
chemist shaped the Bal-
four Declaration (1917)
which gave international
recognition to the Jewish
homeland.
But the question remains
whether Weizmann's life
still communicates any-
thing to the nation which he
helped to fashion. While
some characterize Weiz-
mann's actions as exces-
sively moderate or dip-
lomatically patient, he ad-
vocated one prime precept:
dreams without action are
doomed to remain an
abstraction.

hand was a fiery
visionary, but, at the
same time was an unre-
mitting believer in prom-
oting the practical work
of Zionism.
This faith in the triumph
of simple reason may be
outdated in today's world of
tactical violence, yet all his
great achievements used
the rational, scientific
method to attain Zionist
ideals.
History does have a way
of repeating itself — if only
we re-examine legacies of
the past, like those left to us
by Chaim Weizmann.
