With construction of the
exterior of the Holocaust
Memorial Center scheduled
for completion in the next
month and a half, a parlor
meeting at the home of
Markus and Mona Rohtbart
was held to update HMC
supporters on the progress
of the project.
Now that the exterior
work is almost finished, the
interior graphic designer
for Israel's Museum of the
Diaspora, James Gardner,
will present a final plan for
the HMC interior to the
board of directors Sunday.
The building is scheduled
for a late summer opening.
Henry Dorfman, chair-
man of the capital and
endowment fund drive for
the center, said a goal of $2
million has been set for con-
struction and endowment.
The parlor meeting brought
the total raised to date to
more than $1.6 million.
In his remarks to the
group, Rohtbart said the
Holocaust Memorial
Center can and will be
the bridge between us
and future generations."
Other speakers were
Rabbi Charles Rosenzveig,
HMC executive director;
Sister Carol Rittner, Mercy
College instructor who has
taught and written on the
Holocaust; and Irving

I saw a very old man with scraggly gray hair and beard, very
feeble, with a furrowed and drawn face.
He was looking down on a very young child, actually an
infant, who had curly hair, a cherubic face, bright eyes and
an innocent, naive expression. His little hand was held in the
old gnarled hand.
The venerable gentleman was talking to the little one, who
seemed too young to understand anything.
I wondered what those two could possibly have in common.
But when the oldster straightened up, I saw on his body
reaching from his shoulder to his waist, a cloth pennant with
a number on it, 1982, and the little child had one marked
1983!

Ancient Fortress Uncovered

NEW YORK — Dr. Trude
Dothan, professor of arche-
ology at the Hebrew Uni-
versity of Jerusalem, de-
scribes her discovery of a
3,300-year-old Egyptian
outpost in Gaza in a major
article in December's Na-
tional Graphic.
zine.

The discovery yielded
many important artifacts as
well as a possible answer to

iproblem that has puzzled
biblical scholars — why did
the Israelites not follow a
direct route to the Promised
Land during their Exodus
from Egypt?
Prof. Dothan believes her
excavation reveals the wis-
dom of their choice of route
into the Sinai Desert, where
they avoided the Egyptian
fortresses on the shorter
and more direct path along
the coast.
