First Person Born in Tel Aviv Dies

TEL AVIV — The first
person born in Tel Aviv died
recently at the age of 72.
Aharon Danin was born in
his parents' newly-built
home at the corner of Herzl
and Lilienblum streets. As-
sisting in his birth was Zena
Dizengoff, wife of the city's
first mayor.
His mother Rachel was a
Yellin, one of the pioneering
families that helped build
Jewish Jerusalem. His
father, originally from
Bialystok, settled in Pales-
tine in the 1880s.
Throughout his life,
Danin participated actively
in developing the land. This
was a natural consequence
of the education he received
both from his parents and
his teachers, who included
Haim Nahman Bialik and
Ahad Haam.
As a result of the Danin
family's extensive ties
with local Arabs — Aha-
ron's father was saved by
Arabs during the 1929
riots and his brother ac-
companied Golda Meir
on her visits to King Ab-
dulla of Jordan in 1948 —
Aharon was instrumen-
tal in concluding some of
the Jewish National
Fund's most important
land purchases.

He worked for the JNF
from the early 1940s until
the early 1960s, when he
joined the staff of the
newly-created Israel Lands
Administration.
