TEL AVIV — Body
weight reduction, exercise,
non-smoking, and relaxa-
tion have been found to re-
duce high blood pressure
(hypertension) without re-
quiring medication while
reduction of salt intake was
found to be relatively unim-
portant in curbing high
blood pressure, according to
Tel Aviv University's Prof.
Joseph Rosenfeld, head of
the Internal Medicine De-
partment of Beilinson Hos-
pital.
Prof. Rosenfeld made
these observations at an in-
ternational conference on
hypertension sponsored by
the World Health Organiza-
tion and the International
Society of Hypertension.
While the exact
mechanisms and causes of
hypertension are a subject
of speculaton and conten-
tion among physicians, two
separate teams of Tel Aviv
University scienctists cor-

roborate the findings: the
first Prof. Joseph Kalachi
found that reduction of body
weight independent of
sodium intake was suffi-
cient to reduce blood pres-
sure; and a second team, R.
Apel, E. Reisin, M. Modan,
H. Eliahou, D. S. Silverberg
and B. Modan, confirmed
the same findings.
