The proposal stated in
part:
"The Jewish Commu-
nity Center is proposing an
innovative approach to in-
volve and encourage Jewish
identification among sing-
les. The uniqueness of this
project stems from its abil-
ity to 'network' services for
singles in the community.
`Networking' involves
enlisting constituent com-
munal groups and agencies,

"Another unique fea-
ture of this proposal will be
the establishment of a task
force composed of represen-
tatives of the Center board,
the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion, singles and the

Approval for the proposal
was for a four-step process,
first going to the Center
board, then to the Culture
and Education Budgeting
Division of the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation, next to the
Jewish Community Found-
ation and finally to the
Charities.
In the past decade, many
Jewish singles programs
were offered in the commu-
nity, some by the Center,
others by synagogue
groups, and still others by
independent organizations.
Marriage, attrition and loss
of interest caused the de-
mise of many of these
groups. Since the syna-
g"ogue and independent
groups were manned by
volunteers, there was no
provision for continuity.

community-at-large. Task-
force members will reg-
ularly advise and review a
comprehensive program for
singles. This program will
be under the auspices of the
Jewish Community Center.
"Other program objec-
tives include the establish-
ment and maintenance of a
clearinghouse for Jewish
singles activities, outreach
to newcomers such as Rus-
sian Jews and Jewish sing-
les who have been trans-
ferred here for jobs, and de-
velopment of a singles hot-
line for information and re-
ferral. Another major goal
would be to develop a cen-
tral 'address' providing a
variety of pfogram and
service options for Jewish
singles.
"In order to implement
this plan, it is imperative
that full-time professional
staff be employed to enable
the Center to have the con-
tinuity of leadership which
the single adults cannot
provide. themselves.
Budgetary restraints have
prevented the Center from
hiring such a professional to
fill this much-needed role in
the community.

"Evaluation of the pro-
gram will be an ongoing
responsibility of the task
force. Criteria for meas-
uring the success of the
project include consis-
tent or increased
attendance at events,
continual growth of the
mailing list, increased
memberships and other
measurable data. The
task force will be respon-
sible to the Center's
board of directors and
