THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
PRE-CHRISTMAS - POST NEW YEAR'S SPECIAL
Danny Raskin's
iThe Best of Everything
THE FLOODLIGHTS
• weren't there . . . no Hol-
lywood or Broadway stars
. . . no flickering camera
lights . . . or footsteps in ce-
ment.
But for certain, the open-
;)
ing of Stage & Co. Restau-
, rant Delicatessen on the
Boardwalk, Orchard Lake
Rd. near 15 Mile, was sensa-
tional in its own way.
If nothing else, the ques-
tioning of "When is the new
Stage opening?' has finally
ended . . . and been an-
swered.
However, this is far from
all . . . Hardly anyone ex-
pected it to be so absolutely
beautiful ... Looking at the
unfinished inside a number
• of times, we even wondered
ourselves what was happen-
ing with it seeming so "cut
up" . . . The finished product
is far from our expectations
1 as to what Stage & Co.
would look like . . . It is
• much more for the better, to
be sure.
Owners Harriet and
Jack Goldberg can look
with much pride at their
finished product ...
thanks in no small meas-
ure to their barrister son
Steve, who helped put the
place together since back
in June ... coordinating
its assemblage with inter-
ior designers Hank
Gluckman and son Cary,
who worked 10 months
on the new Stage & Co... .
plus Bernie Schrier of
Gold Star, whose kitchen
magic has produced a
,, gem.
Stage & Co. on Orchard
Lake Rd. will be operated by
Harriet, Jack and daughter
Diane . . . Their other spot,
Stage Delicatessen, will
definitely remain on Nine
Mile in Oak Park . . . run by
° another daughter, Sheila.
Without much doubt,
Stage & Co., seating 148 at
booths and tables, is one of
the finest-looking
restaurant-delicatessens in
I the country.
Certainly no expense was
spared . . . or imaginative
talent . . . The colors are
beautifully coordinated to
create a sensation of warm
intimacy.
All booths are in a gray
padding, with mushroom
burgundy tables ... same
with chairs and tables ...
Gray carpeting sur-
rounds the entire dining
room ... one wall is fully
muraled with movie stars
(a blowup of the classic
picture hanging at Stage
Deli in Oak Park) ... An-
other wall is of all natural
stained wood ..- as is the
tops of booths beneath
brass rails ... Smoked
glass separates the
booths.
Broadway and show biz
posters are graciously dis-
played about the room .. .
and recessed lighting is in
the fully accoustical ceiling
. . . A glamorously elegant
touch is the ingenious set-
ting of footlights around the
ceiling . . . This in itself is
really something to see .. .
1
The grays and burgundy
color decor is further
enhanced by ebony black
scattered about.
To the kitchen . . . and
such a beautiful one of
gleaming, stainless steel
and tiled floor . . . Most
people love to visit the
kitchen of a restaurant at
one time or another . . . and
here came the brainy idea of
Jack Goldberg . . . At the
preview grand opening,
people went through the
kitchen for their buffet
choices of food . . . and were
amazed at this large,
beauteous bevy of shimmer-
ing steel within its ex-
travagant layout.
The preview was much
more than people could im-
agine and most enjoyable.
Harriet and Jack
couldn't have picked a
couple of better barten-
ders for the evening than
Sam Ward and Richard
Oliver ... They're among
the best ... working to-
gether about 25 years ...
back to 1957 when they
started together with
Sammy Lieberman while
he was catering in and
out of Sammy's Avalon
Room on Coolidge, Oak
Park.
Sam and Richard contin-
ued right on with him
through the Raleigh House
days of Wyoming and Tele-
graph . . . not just pouring
drinks . . . but doing it with
the finesse that only expert
professionalism can attain.
Harriet's and Jack's
choice of waitresses is also
without question . . . as evi-
denced by the presence of
Donna Platt, who was a
stalwart at Darbys 10 years
until it burned down in 1968
. . . Donna and her fine bus-
person son, Ron, are to-
gether again at Stage & Co.
The preview was a
crowded affair . . . with
people seeing friends they
hadn't said hello to in a lot of
years.
But back to the wonderful
decor . . . it's really that sen-
sational . . . Even the re-
strooms bear mentioning
. . . men's room with its
gleaming black tile and
ladies room with gray tile
and huge full-size mirror
surrounded by theatrical
lighting . . . If for only this
moment, gals going to the
restroom at Stage & Co. can
adjust their makeup with
the feeling of a star.
Can't forget the elabo-
rate exhaust system that
puts in air as it is taken
out of kitchen and dining
room areas by just the
pushing of buttons.
Cocktails will soon be
available at Stage & Co... .
and the hours sort of take
people back to the "See you
at Darbys" days . . . tempor-
ary hours will be Mondays
through Thursdays 9 a.m. to
11 p.m. . . . Fridays and
Saturdays til 1 a.m. and
Sundays 9 a.m.-10 p.m.
The handsome lighted
sign outside Stage & Co.
welcomes people to a new
world of glamorous
restaurant-delicatessen
elegance . . . a sure hit.
WHO SAYS Healthy
Jones on Northwestern and
12 Mile doesn't have tur-
key? . . . Certainly this
Thanksgiving, Thursday,
12 noon to 6 p.m.. . . There's
turkey and all the trim-
mings in a big two-for-one
Jewish News coupon spe-
cial.
BERNARDI'S is name
of place taking over at
Applegate Square, North-
western between 12 and 13
Mile . . . But don't be misled
by this fine name . . . it'll
have popular-priced family
dining for breakfast, lunch
