LONDON — A study of
the Moral Majority — the
fundamentalist Christian
organization which sup-
ports right-wing political
causes — has been pub-
lished by the Institute of
Jewish Affairs in London.
The author is Marc Stern
of the American Jewish
Congress.
Stern writes, "Many Jews
and Jewish organizations
have identified the Moral
Majority, along with the
religious right, as a threat
to the religious freedom the
Jewish community enjoys
in the U.S. — though this
view is not unanimous.
Those Jews who view the
Moral Majority as a threat
to their domestic well-being
are perplexed by the ex-
pressions of support for Is-
rael made by the religious
right."

TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
Israel army is looking for
somewhere to send about
640 non-Arab prisoners it
wants to free from the de-
tention camp at Ansar in
southern Lebanon.
Of the 9,000 people de-
tained and held in the camp
for questioning, some 3,000
local residents, both Pales=
tinians and Lebanese, have
been released.
The army has found that
most of the non-Arabs they
wish to release cannot be
sent home as their own
countries refuse to accept

"The heart of Jewish un-
ease with the Moral Major-
ity is that it appears to as-
sume, disclaimers not-
withstanding, that there is
one single, ascertainable,
Christian moral position
which must become law,"
writes Stern. The organiza-
tion has gone to great
lengths to disavow any
suggestions that it is anti-
Semitic but there are dif-
ferences in the Jewish
community on this point.

"The association of the
Moral Majority with the
secular right, a group
notorious for harboring
anti-Semites, has not
eased Jewish concerns."
Furthermore, although
friendly to Israel, the
religious right regard the
rise of the state of Israel
as a fulfilment of biblical

Arab Peace Plan
Given to France

PARIS (JTA) — King
Hussein of Jordan on Tues-
day presented the Arab
peace plan to President
Francois Mitterrand and
later said that the French
and Arab positions have
many points in common.
Hussein, who led a seven-
member Arab delegation,
including a PLO represen-
tative, later said, "France
has examined our plan in a
positive and constructive
way."
Hussein, who is due to
lead the delegation to Mos-
cow and Peking next, said
that the Arab states will
continue to press their case
while exploring the pos-
sibilities offered by the
American peace plan as out-
lined by President Reagan
in September.
The Arab delegation con-
sisted of the foreign minis-
ters of Syria, Morocco,
Algeria, Saudi Arabia as
well as the PLO's Farouk
Kaddumi and Arab League
Secretary General Chedli
Klibi.

Wider fears are that calls
for Christians to "retake
America," which appear
prominently in religious
right publications, inevita-
bly "come close to excluding
non-Christians from a say
in how the country is to be
governed," Stern says.
