home community. The
consensus of the families
was that the new congre-
gation will have a Reform
affiliation but should in-
clude much tradition.
Several committees have
been formed. One group of
residents is coordinating an
advertising campaign to
reach as many Jewish
families as possible in Troy,
Rochester, Clawson, Bir-
mingham and Sterling
Heights. Another group is
finding a location for serv-
ices. A third committee is
exploring the procedures of
forming a new synagogue.

A meeting is planned for
the evening of Dec. 9. For
information, call Phyllis
Wenig, 978-2829; or Nancy

According to Pamela
Spitzer, casual discussions
about a synagogue for Troy
had been on-going for 12
years. With the formation of
a branch of United Hebrew
Schools in Troy in 1980, a
core of active Jewish
families was drawn to-
gether. A telephone and let-
ter solicitation has added to
this core, to the point where
25 families are now commit-

Ms. Spitzer said

RABBI LEIBOWITZ
Oak Park, on Wednesday at
6:30 p.m.
The Siyum Hashass
marks the completion of the
study of the entire Babylo-
nian Talmud by groups of
Jews in the greater Detroit
region, following a schedule
which is adhered to by
groups of Jews throughout
the world.
This particular - siyum
marks the eighth time that
the entire shass has been

tions will take place in
Jewish communities
throughout the United
States, Israel, Europe, Au-
stralia and South America.

yeshiva has established
branches in Israel and in
many cities in the U.S.
Among the cities that have
branches are Los Angeles,

Merkaz Hosts Melave Malka

The Merkaz, the layman's'
association of the Vaad
Harabonim, announces that
its second annual melave
malka will take place Dec 4
at 8:30 p.m. at Cong. Dovid
Ben Nuchim.
This event will be an
opportunity for all kosher
consumers to demonstrate
their support for kashrut in
the Detroit Jewish commu-
nity.
The Merkaz enables the
Vaad to retain a full time
kashrut administrator to
oversee supervision of
products, caterers and
kosher food establishments.
It publishes the Kosher-
Gram newsletter and re-
searches and answers con-
sumer phone inquiries.
The Merkaz works to
encourage local mer-
chants to provide more
kosher products and
services to the commu-
nity and works closely

with day schools and
Talmud Torahs by pro-
viding them with educa-
tional materials.
The melave malka will
feature Rabbi H. Zecharia
Senter, rabbinic adminis-
trator of the Chaf-K, a na-
tional kosher supervision
service.
He was ordained in 1961
at the Isaac Elchanan Rab-
binical Seminary of
Yeshiva University and re-
ceived-his PhD degree from
its Balfour Graduate School
of Science in 1963. He is also -
an associate professor of
mathematics at Fairleigh
Dickinson University in
Rutherford, N.J. and is a
member of the Association
of Orthodox Jewish Scien-
tists of America.
For reservations, call the
Merkaz office, 968-6310 be-
tween 9 a.m. and noon,
