In our party, Marilyn
Frumkin enjoyed the
pickerel, which at Benji's
certainly enjoys its title
as king of the sea.

His whitefish isn't the or-
dinary . . . It is jumbo Lake
Superior whitefish . . . very
much unlike the eight to 10
ounce Canadian flat
whitefish which is served in
many places.
Fish and chips at Benji's
is made with fresh scrod, or
when he can get it, pollock.
It is such a pleasure to eat
fish without any odor what-
soever . . . and not a single
bone . . . These are factors of
utmost importance.
Benji and Lois have a
couple of desserts which
must bear mentioning . . . a
creamy, custard-like, very
delicious rice pudding .. .
and Apple Mountain,
home-baked apple pie
mixed with ice cream and
served in a large sundae
glass.
Our second visit to Benji's
was quite a revelation .. .
Seated all around were
people who could well afford
any price . . . but obviously
know their fish and where
to go for it. . . . Others have
also disdovered this fact .. .
Reservations for five or
more are now recommended
at Benji's.
STILL SOME tickets left
for the big Gypsy Festival at
Jakks, Greenfield and 10
Mile . . . Nov. 22-23, 7:30
p.m. til 2 a.m. . . . $10 ad-
mission includes a lot of fun
and much music by Billy
Rose, 15 musicians and sin-
gers (violins, viola, bass vio-
lins, cymbalum by the best,
Gus Horwath, plus his
Gypsy Wanderers) . . .
Available food will also in-
clude a Hungarian menu
along with American fare.

The Best of Everything )

RIIISHAW INN

at Hoa Kow on W. Nine Mile
just west of Coolidge, brings
additional attraction to the
28-year-old oriental restau-
rant which has thrived on
consistency.
Seventeen Szechuan
items are on the separate
insert menu . . . cooked as
they should be . . . without
the false conception that
such dining is too hot .. .
Good Szechuan preparation
is as people desire it .. .
mild, medium or hot . . . We
like to taste food without
fanning our mouths . . . and
enjoyed a recent visit to Hoa
Kow . . . with sizzling rice
soup, Moo Shu chicken,
Szechuan beef brought
sizzling on a platter and

Kubo chicken with cashew
nuts ... Hoa Kow's new di-
mension is a big treat.
WHEN PEOPLE think
of Restaurant Duglass,
Southfield and 12 1/2 Mile,
they immediately begin
churning ideas of elegant
gourmet dishes . . . They're
not wrong . . . but casual
dining without sauce or
flambe flair is also likely.
For instance, our recent
luncheon there . . . just a
plain omelette (green pep-
pers, onions, mushrooms
and cheese) and sauteed
potatoes . . . The omelette
was made to perfection and
the potatoes were delicious
. . . both prepared by day
chef Tino Barrera ... Our
attentive waiter was Paul
Willis and busperson
Richard Gilmore.
Even Paula Camarata,
who does the books, comes
from her office chair to help
out pouring coffee, tending
bar or wherever else she is
needed . . . And smiling,
congenial Mary Beckerman
is the pleasant, courteous
type of hostess folks like to
see and have seat them.

In the evening, Manual
Chavez is still maitre d'
. . . one of the finest
around . . . so very well-
liked by everybody .. .
His Caesar salads are
among the best.

Restaurant Duglass head
chef Patrick Vargo was
trained by the master him-
self, Douglas Grech, who
says Pat is more like him
than anyone he has ever
-met . . . Food to Pat is art .. .
a personal expression com-
bining color, textures and
taste to stimulate the
senses.
There is no more wall
separating the main dining
room from the lounge at
Restaurant Duglass, which
now seats around 120 .. .
The newer area is mirrored
from floor to draped ceiling,
and has a built-in piano bar
at which Allan Singleton
plays Monday through Fri-
day evenings and Sunday's
"Principal Meal" dining
11:30 to 2:30 . . . On Satur-
days, there is ballroom
dancing with the Ken Mur-
phy Trio . . . People can dine
at the piano bar with its
high-backed chairs.
Soon to come at Restau-
rant Duglass are
businessperson's luncheons
. . . with 45 minute in and
out guarantee . . . grilled
specials and salads . . . Also
lunch and dinner tableside
making of perfect martinis,
with frozen glass, etc.

RECENT PRE-
SENTATION of the Sis-

terhood Adult Studies
Series at Cong. Shaarey
Zedek was called "Kreative
Kosher Kooking in a WOK
Way" . . . demonstrated by
member Rosanne Schlussel,
local gourmet cook.
The one-session course,
attended by 30, included the
basics of wok cooking, with
tips and tasting . . . Rosanne
is an interior designer by
profession.
