NCJW Branch Helps Working Women Fill Volunteer Role
By HEIDI PRESS
Traditionally, Jewish
women have played a vital
role in the volunteer sector
— in helping the needy, the
disabled, causes for Jews
and Israel.
Yet, many women who
are pursuing careers in the
business and professional
worlds are not able to par,
ticipate in volunteer activi-
ties that occur during the
day, while they are at the
office.
Is this potential volunteer
power lost?

Greater Detroit Section of
National Council of Jewish
Women has developed a
branch, one of 23 nation-
ally, to help meet the needs
of working women who also
want to be active in com-
munal causes.
The Business and Profes-
sional Branch began last
year with 26 members, and
nearing its first anniver-
sary has grown to 49, ac-
cording to Hillary Gitstein,
chairman of the branch.
According to Miss Gits-
tein, the chapter has two
functions: to provide addi-
tional volunteer power and
networking.
Asked how B and P
Chapter differs from
other Jewish women's
groups who meet in the
evening, she said, "We
don't have the fund-
raising connotation that
Federation Career
Women's unit has. We
also have non-Jewish
members. It has to do
with the nature of the
branch."
Flexibility is the key to
the success of the chapter.
Women can give an hour
here or there — they can be
as active or inactive as their
job schedules allow.
Miss Gitstein said that 70
percent of the members
never joined a Jewish
organization, and the other
30 percent are coming back
to NCJW after having
begun careers.
She said the B and P
Branch "works coopera-
tively with the section,"
adding that there is a
liaison relationship. "There
is an ongoing information
exchange. It is a cooperative
relationship where
everyone benefits."
A social worker in pri-
vate practice, Miss Gits-
tein said that the chapter
is developing a resource
directory, comprised of
members' names, just as
its counterparts across
the country are doing.
The national office will
act as a clearinghouse for
the branches.
Asked about the composi-
tion of the branch, Miss
Gitstein said it is comprised
of single and married
women. Not all work full-
time, but they are all
career-oriented.
She said the emphasis of
the branch is three fold: ad-
vocacy, education and social
action. "Business and pro-
fessional women can relate
to all three areas — that's
what makes us different
from other groups.
"Involvement is more im-
portant than mailing in a
check."
Dr. Weitzman
to Discuss Lupus
The Michigan Lupus
Foundation will hear Dr.
Raymond Weitzman discuss
lupus, laboratory tests and
monitoring the disease and
psychological problems
associated with it, at a
meeting 7:30 p.m. Monday
at the Farmington Library,
23500 Liberty.
The meeting and discus-
sion is open to the public.
The former chairman
of SPACE, the NCJW
service for divorced and
widowed men and
women and their
families, Miss Gitstein
has been on the NCJW
board since 1976. She is
involved in the organiza-
tion's CASA — Court Ap-
pointed Special Advo-
cate — program and the
subcommittee on aging.
She stressed that NCJW
was a forward-thinking
organization, adding that
among its goals is the crea-

stria rescinded anti-Jewish
laws in 1872.
tion of a national system to
involve business and pro-
fessional women in the vol-
unteer sector.
Ultimately, the aim is to
increase chapters over the
next five years so that every
city that has a NCJW sec-
tion will have a business
and professional branch.
"We have a responsibility
to meet needs. As long as we
do our job, people will join."

fessional Branch activities,
