cording to an interview with

Weinberger in the current

SCOTT'S KORNER ...

"Latest story out here in
Texas (Scott goes to Univer-
sity of Texas in Austin,
where we are now visiting)
is about a Houstonite in
Washington watching gov-
ernment minions at the
Mint burning soiled cur-
rency and remarked, 'Hot
damn! Thought we were the
only family that did that!'
"They also tell about the
cat in Dallas who died and
left an old lady $4 million.
Also of a Texas lady, boast-
ing about her new swim-
ming pool, who was inter-
rupted by an unimpressed

socialite from up north.
`Virtually everybody I know
has a swimming pool,' she
declared. The Texas lady
replied, 'With high and low
tides like ours?'
"Actually, Texans aren't
really as boastful as people
think . . . They're hard-
working people and are
proud of the fact that unem-
ployment is so low."
LITTLE WOMEN, hand
embroidered soft sculptures
that stand by themselves
are at Ilona and Gallery on
Orchard Lake Rd. and 14
Mile in Hunters Square.
They're the creation of
Nancy Camden Hauser,
Michigan artist . : . and
range from fancy to folk
with old-fashioned print
fabrics, old lace collars, rib-
bons on their waist, flowers,
furs, etc. . . . Various styles
are created, using different
color wool for hair and hav-
ing different combinations
of accessories . . . making
each of the "Little Women"
one of a kind.
HELLO ... from Anne
and Ernie Iczkovitz, old
friends now living in
Seminole, Fla. . . . "Every
day is Sunday, every night
Saturday night," says Er-
nie, former Internal Reve-
nue gent for so many years.

LOOKING BACK On
Columns of Yesteryears .. .
Aug. 18, 1967 ... "Dur-
ing the recent rioting, when
traveling was a problem, at-
torney Henry Baskin
shared a taxicab one early
morning with a gentle little
lady who admitted to 80
years . . . When they
reached her address, Hank
said, `I'm going to see you
safely to the door' . . . 'You
positively are not,' 'she said
forcefully. `My husband
might be looking.' "

Weinberger also made
these points: PLO leader
Yasir Arafat's meetings
with world leaders do not
have "much effect one way
or the other"; the United
States has an "unshakeable
commitment" to maintain
not only Israel's security
but also "its military edge";
the Pentagon is "very
pleased" with the perform-
ance of American equip-
ment in Israeli hands in the
Lebanese operation.
"It is very important to
sepaiate the Palestine prob-
lem from the PLO and
Arafat," and while the PLO
chieftain "is attempting to
act as spokesman for that
whole group, I don't know to
what extent he has a valid
claim to that," Weinberger
said. He was interviewed in
the Pentagon by Naomi
Lippman, editor of the
Jewish World, and Stewart
Ain, contributing editor.

The Defense Secretary
also told his interviewers
that it was a "totally
wrong perception" that
he is the Administration
leader least sympathetic
to Israel, adding, "Any
perception that I am op-
posed to Israel is totally
false."

Weinberger was asked if
he had "been able to learn
from the Israelis all the in-
formation they have
learned about the Soviet
weapons" captured in
Lebanon.
"We haven't in the sense
that we have in the Falk-
lands because that conflict
is over and we are getting a
total exchange of informa-
tion there. We hope to have

Israeli Inquiry
Committee Visits
Massacre Sight

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The three members of the
judicial commission estab-
lished to determine whether
Israel had any culpability in
the massacre of Palesti-
nians in west Beirut last
month, visited the scene of
the killings this week.
The commission, headed
by Chief Justice Yitzhak
Kahan of the Supreme
Court, consists of Supreme
Court Justice Aharon
Barak and Gen. (ret.)
Yonah Efrat.
Escorted to Beirut by De-
puty Chief of Staff Gen.
Moshe Levy and other
senior officers, they viewed
the Sabra and Shatila refu-
gee camps where the mas-
sacres occured September
16-18 from the points where
the Israeli army had obser-
vation posts at the time. The
army has since evacuated
Beirut.
