Music Highlights 1982-1983 Cultural Calendar in Israel
NEW YORK — Visitors

The Israel Philhar-
monic Orchestra will
commemorate the 100th
birthday of the founder
of the orchestra, violinist
Bronislaw Huberman, in
a special series of gala
concerts at Tel Aviv's
Frederick Mann au-
ditorium Dec. 3-10.
An ambitious repertoire
is planned with visiting
soloists Isaac Stern, It-
zhak Pearlman and
Pinhas Zukerman joining
the orchestra in per-
formances of Brahms,
Tchaikovsky, Goldmark,
Elgar, Sibelius and
Beethoven.
Following the Huberman
Festival is the annual week
of sacred music in
Jerusalem, "Liturgica '82,"
produced by the
Jerusalem Symphony
Orchestra, with guest ap-
pearances by the Handel
Dutch Society, Choir of the
Music Academy of South
Bavaria and international
soloists. Works by Men-
delssohn, Haydn, Handel,
Telemann, Leonard Berns-
tein and Benjamin Britten
will be • performed in
theaters and concert halls
in the capital, with a special
organ recital at the Luthe-
ran Church of the Redeemer
in the Old City on Dec. 29.
Balancing these three
festivals are a variety of
performances in Israel by
American stars including
Donna Summer and Gloria
Gaynor.
The finale of the 1982-
1983 season is the fouth Ar-
thur Rubinstein Interna-
tional Piano Master Compe-
tition to be held in
Jerusalem and Tel Aviv
from March 20 through
April 7. The competition
performances are open to
the public, and have in
former years been of im-
mense interest, not only to
music lovers, but also to
general audiences.

Shaw has been appointed
assistant national execu-
tive director of the Jewish
War Veterans of the U.S.A.
Shaw, 30, has been asso-
ciated with Jewish com-
munal organizations pro-
fessionally for the past 10
years. He has served as na-
tional program director for
the JWV since January
1980. His previous positions
include community affairs
associate for international
concerns for the Jewish
Community Council of Met-
ropolitan Detroit.

Jersey Senate this week
adopted a bill that would
provide a minute of silence
in New Jersey public
schools at the beginning of
each day.
The New Jersey governor
will not say whether he will
sign the bill into law.
WSU Hillel Plans Events
The Bnai Brith Hillel
Foundation affiliate at
Wayne State University
will present Dr. Clinton
Bailey, anthropologist,
12:30 p.m. Wednesday in
the Hillel Lounge on cam-
pus.
Dr. Bailey, a specialist on
the Bedouins, will speak to
the anthropology and Near
East studies departments at
2:30 p.m. in the French
room in Manoogian Hall.
