ter, when I was pondering a
subject for my doctoral dis-
sertation, I realized it had to
be Yeats.' "
Later, in 1945, Prof.
Ellmann contacted Yeats'
widow and gained access to
Yeats' previously un-
touched manuscripts. It was
Mrs. Yeats who started
Ellmann's interest in Joyce,
after they discussed a
famous interview the two
authors had when Yeats
was 37 and Joyce was 20.
