A team of cardiologists at
the Hadassah-Hebrew Uni-
versity Medical Center re-
cently implanted a tiny
pacemaker into a two-
month-old baby. Doctors
say that it should las-the in-
fant until heis about ten
years old when the
pacemaker will have to be
changed for a new one. Dr.
Arye Simcha, pediatric car-
diologist at Hadassah, re-
ports that the patient will
be able to function normally
in every way.
The baby, born to parents

of North African origin, ap-
peared to be normal at
birth. However, a few days
after he went home he
began to have fainting at-
tacks, losing consciousness
from 20 to 30 seconds.
The parents brought the
baby to Hadassah where his
electrocardiogram, which
was monitored con-
tinuously with a special
tape recorder, revealed that
his heart slowed down or
stopped completely. The
team of cardiologists then
implanted a special

pacemaker weighing only
40 grams, to regulate the
heart.
The pacemaker, made in
the U.S., was implanted
into the wall of the stomach
because of insufficient space
in the chest cavity, and the
electrodes were attached to
the baby's heart.
Dr. Simcha says that
about 80 babies or small
children undergo open-
heart surgery each year at
Hadassah. Two-thirds of
these children are Arabs,
mostly from the West Bank.

Hadassah

The ancient tongue of hebrew has made no contribution
to man's vocabulary of illness. But one hebrew word has
become synonymous with healing — Hadassah.
The Hadassah Medical Organization maintains two
outstanding hospitals in Jerusalem. These medical centers .
are world famous for healing, teaching and research — in
fluent hebrew help us keep hebrew healthy.
