The Hebrew aconym for
the Women's Corps of the
IDF is "Chen," which also
happens to be a Hebrew
word for "charm."
This reflects, in some
way, the attitude of the IDF
towards the military service
of Israeli women. While
their contribution to the ef-
ficiency of their units is re-
garded as essential, there is
also a recognition that their
"womanhood" demands
different service criteria
from those applied to men.
For example, women
have more comfortable
quarters (off limits to male
soldiers) and there are rules
which strictly regulate the
amount of heavy work and
guard duty they undertake.
Married women soldiers
also have special privileges
to ensure. that their family
life does not
n suffer.
