THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

What does being Jewish
mean?
It is a feeling deep within
each and every Jew. It is a way
of life, of being looked at, and of
looking at the rest of the world.

Friday, October 8, 1%2 13

You don't have to explain
what being a Jew is to a Jew.
He knows. He understands. For
he has survived.
He has survived for over
5700 years in the face of
adversity. In these many years,
there have been times when he
stood united with his people
against foreign enemies. At
Masada. In Egypt. In Eastern
Europe. And today, in Israel.
In these 5700 years, the
Jewish people have endured.
Why? We are not a people large
in number nor great in strength.
We have endured because we
have a vision. A vision of
eternal Israel.
• This vision endures hatred,
violence, unimaginable crimes.
Jews fight this hate with deeds,
with actions, and with moral
strength. The vision endures
because Jews know it must.
Today, we are faced with
adversity once more. We cannot
give up the vision now, after
5700 years. We must unite
together not only to maintain our
vision, but to help it become reality.
