Sabbath Tradition Explained

instituted to prevent one
from following the forbid-
den practice of the Karaites.
The Karaites misinter-
preted the scriptural
prohibition of lighting a
fire on the Sabbath as
meaning that one is sup-
posed to be without fire
or light on the Sabbath.
The rabbis ruled that sit-
ting in the darkness on the
Sabbath be prohibited be-
cause it is effective in
eliminating the spiritual
meaning of the Sabbath.
The mother thus makes
these prayers for her chil-
dren hoping that their lives
will be spiritually illumi-

that they will carry forth
this spiritual flame of learn-
ing and practice throughout
the week and throughout
their lives.

It is customary for a
woman to ask for a blessing
for her children, so that they
may become learned and
practicing Jews in Torah
and mitzvot, when she
lights the Sabbath candles.
It has often been said that
the Torah is like a flame and
the mitzvot (command-
ments) are like lamps.
When lighting the Sabbath
candles one is asked to
understand that it is not
only a physical flame that is
being ignited. It is actually
a spiritual flame which the
mother hopes will stimulate
her children to become
learned in Torah and func-
tional in mitzvot.
It might also serve well to
remember that the rabbinic
development of ritual on the
occasion of lighting the can-
