THE ROGOFFS

considered an Ilui in
Talmud at the age of 12,
pursuing a tradition in
rabbinic studies as hav-
ing been preceded by five
generations of rabbis in
his family.
He came to New York
with his mother, Dec. 16,
1915, his father having died
two years earlier. They
came to Detroit in 1917. He
studied at Northern High
School and Junior College,
and earned his BS degree in
medicine in 1925 and his
MD degree in 1927 from the
University of Michigan.
Interning at Providence
Hospital in 1928, his medi-
cal services continued there
for 54 years, interrupted
only by his military services
in World War II.
Commencing as an army
captain, assigned to Ft.
Slocum, New York, in
1942, he retired as a major
in 1946 and commenced his
medical practice here again,
still being active uninter-
ruptedly since then.
For 14 years he was di-
rector of the Providence
Personal Health Service
Department and remains
there in an emeritus role.
In his student days at the
University of Michigan, he
was among the founders of
the Hillel Foundation.
In addition to his leader-

years.
Mrs. Rogoff, the former

Bialystok, Russia, and was
brought to Detroit by her
parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Samuel Epstein, in 1921.
Like Dr. Rogoffs father,
Samuel Epstein was a
shohet and was active here
in that capacity for many
years. Her mother died here
five years ago at the age of
107.
In 1964, Mrs. Rogoff won
