I hate the idea of causes,
and if I had to choose be-
tween betraying my coun-
try and betraying my
friend, I hope I should have
the guts to betray my coun-
try.

forgotten because one can-
not leave without reply such
an outrage against truth,

the genocide of the Nazis
against the Jewish people
and not only against them."
The organized Italian
Jewish community, mean-
while, has directed its pro-
tests to the Italian govern-
ment. Arafat was expected
to be received here by
President Sandro Pertini of
Italy and Foreign Minister
Emilio Colombo.
The Assembly of Ita-

Chief Rabbis
Appeal to Pope
JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Israel's two Chief Rabbis
sent an impassioned cable
to Pope John Paul II on
Monday urging him to re-
verse his intention to meet
with PLO chief Yasir
Arafat. Sephardic Chief
Rabbi Ovadia Yosef and
Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi
Shlomo Goren wrote, in
part:
"The entire Jewish people
in Israel and throughout the
world were deeply shocked

tion among whose fun-
damental objectives is
the violent suppression
of the state of Israel."
The Union of Italian
Jewish Communities re-
leased a statement express-
ing its "painful amazement"
that the "highest Italian
authorities" will receive an
"exponent of an organiza-
tion whose collaboration
with Italian terrorism has
been amply documented
and whose constitution still
proposes the destruction of a
state recognized by Italy."
The union demanded that
Italy, "in the light of a
negotiated solution of the
Middle East conflict, con-
demn terrorism on all sides
and firmly insist on the re-
vision of the PLO constitu-
tion during the coming
encounters."

While strolling the campus grounds at the University of
Edinburgh, it wouldn't be unusual to hear "Shalom aleichem"
uttered in the same breath as "Hoot, mon!" Because Hebrew was a
language taught here as early as the 1600's. As a matter of fact, the
first Jews who came to Scotland had been specially invited
to Edinburgh just to teach Hebrew. Can you imagine stu-
dents in the land of King Charles celebrating graduation in
the language of King David?
You don't have to be a Hebrew major from
Edinburgh to know that on such occasions a toast with
fine scotch whisky is in order. In America, the favorite is
. J&B Rare Scotch. Special blending has given J&B a fla-
vor in a class by itself. Which is why we say it whispers.
And which is why J&B is the worthy spirit at any toast,
whether you say, "Cheers, Laddie!" or simply, "L'Chayim!"
J&B. it whispers.
